Today I bought 8 2008 Austrian Philharmonics for $3 over spot. I feel pretty good about it. However, my LCS also had average circulated Peace and 1921 Morgans for $24. That is a pretty good price too. Also some pre '21's in G to VG etc. I guess what tipped the scales for me is that I didn't have any Philharmonics. Which do you think was the better deal?

Philharmonics are a good choice. I personally don't want to own any 1921 Morgans. Peace dollars are another story. If you can get the older Philharmonics, they are cool because they don't have a denomination on it. They simply say .999 Fine and 1 Troy Ounce, and really that's all you need. Denominations, in my opinion, are stupid on bullion. They pretend to display a kind of stability by saying they're 1,5 Euros, but we all know what's going on. I like Libertads and bars for that reason. Silver is still silver. You have to ask yourself which fineness and which form is more liquid for your situation. If you like paying $3+ that's fine as long as you know what you're doing. Interesting thing about Philharmonics is that the edges have no reeding; they are smooth.

I would go with the Philharmonic because of the silver content.... AND because I don't have that date (may be I'll do a trade with you once you have enough post....hehehe).

To me, that's a tough call. The Phils are pure vanilla, plain Jane bullion and very liquid. I personally like them and have a fair number of them.
There's an entire vigorous, robust little world of Morgan lovers. They tend to focus on and love their better condition, higher-end, rarer (and preferably graded+slabbed) pre-21 Morgans best, but they love them all anyhow. I'm not sure if there's a similar Peace camp, but it wouldn't surprise me.
At any rate, I think $24 for decent-looking Morgans (no culls or slicks) isn't bad and $3 over spot isn't bad for Phils. I guess it all comes down to whether you want to stick with straight-up low-premium, liquid bullion or whether you want to start evolving toward maybe becoming a Morgan guy.
For me-- I'd stick with the Phils and you made the choice I would have made.

Thanks for the replies. My favorite silver is US 90% halves and quarters, but because of the high premiums since April, I have diversified into a few ASE's, Silver Dollars, Canadian 80%, and now Philharmonics - while still buying some 90% here and there. All the silver dollars I have are EF or AU. '21 Morgans and Peace. Nice, but not my main area. I hope we will see the days of 90% near melt again. If not, ASE's and Canadian 80% seems like good value to me.

Libertad, why no love for Morgans? Is it the premium or do you just not like them?

Morgans are cool, and hold their value better than .999 if POS goes down. I believe POS will go up, but that's another story '21 Morgans aren't that exciting, but I believe they are worth slightly more than Peace.
