I received a Whitman Nickel folder as a Father's Day gift a few months ago. My son noticed my Tupperware container full of nickels and a light went off in his head. Good choice as I needed to go through all of them anyway. All of the coins in this set are from circulated coins that I have received as change. Here's what it looks like so far: Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Not bad. I've still got a few holes to fill, especially coins from the 50s. I did find the 1948D today as I am actively looking to fill my holes from here on out. Oh, yeah...the silver War Nickels were from a stash that I have in my safe. I was sure that I would have all of them......obviously not.

Funny. I have the exact same album with 1938-1961 Nickels. You got more silver nickels than me by 1, but more of my holes are filled. I prefer to roll hunt to sped-fill my album when just finding nickels in change isn't fast enough. Good luck with the collection. 1950-D will be a do-sy to find. May I recommend junk bins and coin sights?

For accuracy's sake - this is a folder, not an album!!
I have one of these in the mail too - I like series with no key dates (I'm pretty sure the 1950-D is rare but obtainable - on the other hand, I'm used to Canadian coins where mintages of 3,000,000 means it takes just a bit of extra work to find in circulation!). And I do enough nickel hunting (profitable in Canada, with pre-1982 nickels being worth 7 cents each) to find a bunch of American coins - but no 90/35% silver yet.

I find nickels to be the easiest coin to find older dates. Probably because so few people collect them in comparison.

This is what I love about nickels. Because the design has essentially stayed the same since 1938 (until recently), you can commonly find 70-year old coins in pocket change. Awesome!

A somewhat easy set to assemble. I still need a 1938S and a 1950D if I want to claim street cred roll find. I'm surprised you have most of the War Nickels but not the other common dates? My 1939S was my 2nd from last find after number 3 1955. Be prepared to be in it for the long run as I am still looking after 2 years.

Yeah get some boxes of nickels and your collection will really have some nice coins. I have the Littleton folders from 1938 to current, fun stuff.

Quote: I received a Whitman Nickel folder as a Father's Day gift a few months ago... Looking good. This takes me back. When I first started collecting, I would come home from school and find that my mother had bought me a new folder to start filling. I still have all of my old folders, although the coins were moved to albums after a few years.

Good luck on this journey. I've got a Buffalo nickel set started in a Whitman folder. It's really a shame that they changed the design on the Jefferson. The now "classic" design was just that - CLASSIC!

Thanks for all of the replies! I am at work and posting from my cell phone, so I will try to keep it short.
The reason why I have most of the silver nickels is due to me actively looking for them. My job allows for me to go through huge amounts of coin when time permits. If and when I find one, I buy it at face whether it's a nickel, dime, quarter, etc.
Today, I found a 1945D silver nickel and a 1947D nickel. From here on out, this set will be filled by mostly roll hunted coins from work.

Very nice! Nickels are great fun; I'll bet you'll be able to fill that folder, including the 50D, with just a little perseverance. Let us know when you have it filled.

Great start to a great series! I bet there are still some 1943/2's out there to be found.

Nice start!
I literally just finished (last night) my uncirculated 38-present nickel collection. In circulation, the 50d will be tough. In uncirculated condition, the 39D, 39S and 42D were the toughest. This was a super fun set to build, I wish you luck.
And always, enjoy the journey! It's the best part, in this writer's humble opinion.
