I finally found a coin shop in my area (but quite far from where I live) after going to 3 others that were closed down. Anyhow my initial impression wasn't that great and I initially found the employed sales guy to be a bit off-putting like he was looking down his nose at me and my meager requests. However, things changed fast after I had a chat with a few other people that either worked there, were owners or were hanging around (probably 4 or 5 in all) I ended up buying some rolls of uncirculated wheat cents for $3 a roll and a roll of Mercury dimes that I hand picked for $2 each. One old guy, who may have been the owner, was merrily chatting away and helping me pick the best Mercury's and giving me lots of advice on them. They also gave me a free folder to put the coins in and I had a great time. To top it all, I paid for my purchase in cash and when I got home I discovered that in my change was a steel war cent. Pretty cool if you ask me! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Congrats on having a good time at the coin shop. That is the way for any store to create repeat customers.

we hear the horror stories involving the dolts that don't know any sort of customer service, but these stories often get ignored.

My closest coin shop is 90 miles away, I went there twice, not going again. I don't actually expect to be treated like family but to be treated like an inconvenience is not how to do business. This shop also brings up a question that maybe someone can answer This shop puts no grade on any coin, just price, I do know how to grade reasonably well so I can deal with it but I don't think this is good business, maybe it is, I don't like it myself, I asked him what the grade on something was and he said the price is on the 2x2, you grade it however you like. Maybe he is not trying to do anything wrong but it looks like to me he is expecting some grandmother to come in to buy a coin for her grandson and she knows nothing of grades and prices, she just wants something for her grandson, so she pays probably more than a numismatist would. I am not sure but I don't like it. This is just my opinion, everyone has one.

Great story! I am glad that you have found "Your" new coin shop. I am sure that you will not only have some great stories to come but will also create a friendship with some of the people there. Enjoy!

Wood, I see that a lot on ebay too. My guess is the guy's probably had some bad experience in the past arguing about a certain grade. I agree it's not good business but I can understand not wanting to bicker over a grade, that's not good business either, especially in front of other customers. Just a CYA insurance policy. Rick

Maybe just making his life simpler. I still will not likely go there again. If he was closer I might try every now and then but 90 miles is too far.

Where I live there is only one coin shop near me and the guy who owns the shop is okay, if a little bit uncooperative, but he always gives out little gifts to his good customers and treats everyone respectfully. I really only buy coin folders or 2by2's so who knows. However, I will soon be moving to Philly so who knows what will happen in a huge city. It will take some getting used to. does anyone know any good coin stores in Philly?

Nice to hear a good story about a coin shop. Actually about any hobby store. By me there are many, many of both and usually people get treated as if no one really wants them in the place. That is good to hear of a place where people are not just people. So many bad stories about coin shops makes it a no wonder so many go out of buisness. The ones around me are so bad I wouldn't go to them even if they started giving stuff away.
