I have decided to sell some clutter in my collection ranging from junk silver to proofs and everything in between.
My questions are:
What does the average coin shop buy for? 50%? 60%? More? Less?
Do most coin shops offer more in credit than cash?
I would just like to go in with an idea of what could happen, any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

I'm sure it would depend on the shop and what they specialize in, or have the greatest turnover of.
Just have a good idea of the value of what you're selling and decide if an offer is fair or not. They are in business to make a profit so don't expect retail.

Hang around here for a while, learn what your coins are worth (if you don't already know) and then see if someone on the forum wants to buy. There are several members who will be interested in junk silver as well as any numismatic items. Just need to wait until you reach the requirements for selling here on the forum. You will probably get more and the forum members will pay less without a dealer as a middleman.

And with the previous post. Hang around here and do your selling here. Coin shops have to work on a massive high profit margin so most of them will give you a lot less than you could possibly imagine.

It's hard to sell on this forum.....I've been around for a while now, and I still don't have anywhere near enough posts to post a "For Sale" ad.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't post just to get my post count up. I post only things I can add value to. I think the 250 post rule needs to be revisited for the "For Sale" section....maybe 100 posts and at least 6 months....something like that would be more appropriate.
I like this forum a lot, it's just the "For Sale" rules are ridiculous.

"Junk" silver is hot now so most good dealers pay a fair amount for it. In most cases they already have buyers lined up so they know they won't sit on it. If you have coins that are less popular that is where you will take a bigger hair cut. If you have raw Unc/BU coins that is where some dealers will try to take you. They may low ball your grades. I would suggest looking at a site like APMEX. On many things they list buy prices.

If you are selling junk silver try Craigslist first. Silver is up over the last 2 weeks and people are starting to look again on craigslist. When silver was $35 an ounce I had people lined up to buy my roll hunting finds at spot. Since the silver crash in Feb or whenever it was I can't give the stuff away at spot. I had to turn to ebay last week because I couldn't get any hits on craigslist and then all of a sudden today I have 3 people lined up after I took a hit on the stuff I sold on ebay due to their fees.

Good point but there is always a reason for those rules. For one thing if the standards were lowered, there would be a influx of new members here only to sell. Over a longer period of time, people get to know people. You would realize that if someone just joined to sell something and you bought it and it turned out to be a fake. Or lost in mail or wrong item sent. Sort of like eBay I too think a possible 6 month time as a member too would help a little. Actually your close now to the 250 amount.

I have a pretty good idea of what my stuff is worth. I guess their offer is going to come down to if they think they can sell it. I am planning on just trading in to get some ASE's with great toning that they have. Waiting to get the post count to sell on here will take too long. I did think about it, I am just too new to this community and coin collecting in general to be able to contribute anything meaningful to most discussions. I don't want to just spam posts to get the required amount, that seems like breaking the spirit of the rule.

It was changed from 50 to 250 posts for a reason. There will be no further discussion.

IF it's just buying and selling coins, there are many web sites for just that. ebay is not the only place to buy or sell. As already stated the purpose of this forum is basically information. Such as being mentioned now. Even if there was a no buy/sell policy here, that should really make little difference since someone could just ask where such a place is. Coin shops, coin stores, coin shows and coin clubs are just a few places to buy and sell.

Well I ended up selling some but not all of the coins I took in. I sold all of the junk for what I thought was a fair offer and a few other coins. I thought they would have no problem with some proof halves and quarters I brought in but there prices were a bit to low. I ended up getting four ASE's (three of which are nicely toned) and 14 BU or better pre 64 roosies. I am very happy with my first experience trading with a coin shop, I enjoyed learning the process and felt like I rewarded myself for narrowing my focus for my collection.

I actually joined thinking this will be a great place to sell my coins, after I reach the 250 post limit. I've sold 2 I think, and 3000+ posts later, I'm now buying even more than I ever thought I would. I still use ebay to sell mostly, though I'll consider offer coins to CCF members first before I put any up. Keep posting you may find you'll hit the 250 post count pretty fast I did, and I sure don't have any plans to stop posting, I really like this community. One of the best Internet forums I've ever been a part of.

If its a coin that is easy for them to sell then expect a much greater percentage of retail than perhaps a coin which is very common and hard to sell.
