For one reason or another I've acquired three proof Kennedy halves without intentionally buying any. I've known for a while though that none of the three look the same and now I'm finally going to ask. I have a 64 which is mirror-like on the whole coin, obverse and reverse, and even on the face. So I guess my first question would be was this standard for 64's or is it just a normal '64 but plated with something? I also have a 2000 s which is mirror like in the background but the face is lightly frosted and has very good details. Then I have an '87 s which the face is much more heavily frosted and has a lot less detail than the 2000. So what's the deal with this?

I aint fer sure but I think it all relates to the dies age and prep work the 64 may be an early business strike coin. but what we really need is some pics

I would say they all look normal for their years.
It is possible to get a cameo proof for the 1964, but those are mostly on early die strikes.
On the other two ...the die's are prepared different than the 64, with the intention of getting the frosted/cameo. As the die gets further into production, the cameo will get lighter.

Because of finish at 11 o'clock on the 64, my thinking is that it is not a proof, just a plated coin.

To me, the 64 looks like it has been polished or mildly buffed out. The others look like standard clad proofs.

I would say the 64 is NOT a proof but polished.

Giving the 64 a second look .. I can see what smoke rider and welder are seeing .. that this coin could be polished.
A 64 proof is common to have a mirror finish over all surfaces of the coin. I will have to dig one out and compare .. at second look .. now I am looking at the rims .. if like other proofs .. they should be more flat/squared, not rounded on the edges ... of course .. I still need to dig one out to compare.

I thought right away that it looked polished also.

1964- heavily polished business strike 1987- normal proof 2000- normal proof(hub design was revised in the 1990s and added more detail to the hair)
A proof from 1964 would typically be a Brilliant Proof(no cameo contrast) and Cameos were not commonplace until the 1970s. Cameos and DCAMs still existed for the earlier proofs but they are typically uncommon to rare and will command a premium over an ordinary Brilliant Proof.
