I received this in change recently. It caught my eye initially but I didn't realize exactly what it was until I got home and emptied my pockets. I shed a little tear, but added it to my "misfit coins" collection. Anybody else ever receive a proof coin in change?

they are fairly common these days The term for them is "impaired proofs", and I have gotten several in boxes of coins from my bank.

I have also gotten gold-plated quarters and gold-plated dollars.

I have found a few, mostly quarters. I seem to have very good luck in the honor box at work. I always buy out the coins and often find weird stuff like the aforementioned impaired proof quarters, a couple silver dimes, a bunch of Canadian coins and the occasional Panama quarter.

Wow, that happens when precious proofs happen to become in the hands of non numismatists.

Yes, it is sad, but I am happy when we find and rescue them.

Been through quite a number of boxes of dimes, quarters, nickels and cents and haven't come across any proofs. I have found a few NIFC Kennedy halves, but that's about as lucky as I've gotten. Oh well, I'll keep at it and find one one of these days!

Didn't get them back in change, but I did receive several Kennedy halves that were proofs from a random customer wrapped roll I got at the bank.

A lot of dealers will dump the proofs en masse for cash if they can't sell them.

Nobody dumps "proofs" into circulation.
What's usually happening is dealers are cutting up hundreds or sometimes thousands of sets to sell to the big retailing companies or Shop at Home. A percentage of proof sets have cull coins and these culls simply have to be removed because the retailers don't want them. It tends to be a low percentage and would only be about 4% for '87 quarters but the percentage can be much higher. If you're cutting up say "200" proof sets of each date you'll have a very substantial number of rejects and most of these dealers simply take them to the bank. They could probably sell them at a slight profit but it would hardly be worth the effort and could result in some unhappy customers. Besides, getting them into circulation might stir someone's interest in collecting coins and pay far higher dividends than any other means of dispersing them.
A few proofs will get into circulation by various means but almost everyone you see will be a cull that was spent by dealer who chops up lots of proof sets whenever the value of the pieces exceeds the value of the set.
I once (~2001) got a 1968-S nickel worn to to VG. It was attractive.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
