If there seems to be no political will to stop these coins from entering Canada, the RCMP and CBSA should be working together but these coins are easily imported. Until the government puts pressure on China to eliminate the counterfeit industry, this problem will continue to get worse. I agree that a CAND member dealer should not be selling any copy or replica coins, it defeats the whole purpose of collecting hobby.

I completely and totally agree with nickelsguy. In one of the American CRH threads I saw a Lincoln Cent made of plastic. This coin would not be counterfeit, just like Monopoly money is not counterfeit. If you make a coin that resembles a true version and mark it as copy or replica that doesn't matter at all, it is a counterfeit. If you build a car and stamp it "horse" it's still a car. "Excuse me sir but it's illegal in Canada to possess cars." "Don't worry officer, my car is marked horse." Are the RCMP going to waste their time showing up at your doorstep to confiscate a couple of counterfeit coins and charge you under the criminal code of Canada? Probably not, but they could. You would be innocent until proven guilty and given lots of time for yourself and your lawyer to say things like: "I disagree with the interpretation of resemble" or "I didn't know I couldn't do that" in different ways over and over again... Thus wasting a lot of time and very real money. Perhaps someone dealing in coins marked copy or replica would be treated with leniency. It is a lot more likely that they would go after a store or dealer known to sell counterfeits. They would definitely become interested if you attempted to manufacture counterfeit currency in Canada or attempted to bring said items into Canada. It all really boils down to public opinion. If one morning every Canadian woke up a born-again numismatist and screamed for justice regarding counterfeits...you better believe it would happen. For the time being though it is people like nickelsguy who are putting forth effort for the overall betterment of the hobby. I can't understand why anyone here would be giving him a hard time except for the sake of pointless argument or completely ulterior motives. It makes me upset that his position was immediately attacked.

No one's opinion matters, not the RCMP,not the Crown, not yours nor mine, like grading they are only opinions, only the courts can decide if coins marked "COPY" are illegal. At a stretch even US coins can be said to resemble Canadian coins.I hope that someday soon nickelsguy or the RCMP can take someone to task for selling "COPY" coins and end this debate.

AS a collector and coin lover I am against the so called slot fillers. I would rather have an empty holder waiting to be filled. in my collection I only consider purchasing real coin, so any replicas (marked) do not have a place in my collection. I find them annoying.
What really scares me are the coins, discussed in other threads, from overseas that have no markings at all. these are the real dangerous one from my point of view. And after visiting some of the websites offering these fakes, one could be duped easily. a real threat to our hobby.
So to summarize, marked counterfeit coins can be discussed, personal interpretations of the criminal code can be argued, but the fact is that there are unmarked fakes/counterfeits around and it must STOP.

I am a locksmith and often people come to me to have coins copied. Some of these are clearly stamped DO NOT COPY and they think I should make copies for them. If I have the blank needed I still do not duplicate them, but it's much easier to say "I don't have the restricted keyblank needed" than to just say "no, I won't copy it". Just like it's much easier to put dirt or crap over the "Copy" on a counterfeit coin and try to sell it for big bucks. GO MIKEY and the RCMP!!

Regardless of the crime, the alleged violator must have the mens rea to commit such a fraud. If the intent is not there then no crime has been committed. I wouldn't believe a cop. I would believe the judge after due process.

In fact, if I really wanted to write how I feel, in support of nickelsguy, I suspect I would earn myself a moderator-imposed vacation. I don't know if I have ever met you at a coin show, but if, or when I do, a beer is on me... Thanks!

Thanks for what seems like thankless work nickelsguy and others. What about the COPIES issued from the American Collectors Mint which occasionally advertises on TV. A few years ago I was given as gifts clad double eagles 1933 and 1907 high relief clearly marked copy with serial # (I would have preferred a couple Morgans) but the thought was there. Where do these stand as I have no use for them and sooner or later had planned on selling them, or am I stuck with them.
