My niece picked these up for me during her junior year abroad.

Yep, that's tape on the cardboard.

If the coins are sticky I thought I might give them a quick dip in acetone. But first I wanted to make sure that there was nothing valuable there. I would be surprised if there was since she just kept circulated change.

Thanks for looking.

I know that the photo doesn't show the coins very well, but maybe the ID is enough for you experts.

Like I wrote before, I am all but certain there is no chance of anything valuable in the lot.

I would try acetone to get the tape residue off the coins.

Thanks, carmykle.

The coins are all very light-weight compared to US coins. I have no idea what they're made of ... lots to learn... getting pulled to the dark side. LOL

It's really fun to see all the different coins out there. I can definitely see the attraction to world coins.

Your 10 Baht is pretty much the exact size and composition of a 2 Euro coin, but it's only worth about 30 cents. In some areas of Europe, this scam is so prevalent that vending machines don't even accept 2 Euro coins.

Oh, and a Swiss Franc is worth about a dollar. Switzerland also makes 2 and 5 Franc coins, putting it slightly over to Japan's 500 Yen for the most valuable circulating coin in the world.

Without knowing dates it's impossible to tell if there's anything scarce there, but for the most part, none of the series that are posted have particularly scarce dates or varieties. They're all typical coins you're likely to find in a coin dealer's "World coins $1 each" scratchtray.

Thanks for the replies. Since my niece got these coins while traveling I didn't expect that there would be anything worth much. I was just reluctant to yank the tape off of them without knowing. Although, I have no idea what alternative there is.

if it was my niece who got them for me while traveling I would be tempted to put them in 2x2's with her name on them. 40 years or so from now when I am dead she could have them back knowing they meant enough to me to keep (sometimes "value" can't be measured by a krause catalog)

After receiving these from my niece I sent her a red box and a package of Saflips with cards. My sister said that my niece had saved some coins from her travels before this trip so maybe she has a little interest in the hobby.

No one else in the family has any interest at all so I suppose she will get all the coins someday.
