I was hoping to make the title a bit better, but ran out of characters.
I really don't get the popularity of the 1955 Double Date quarter, yet it is very popular, and commands a significant premium at auctions. I fail to understand why people flock to it when there are similar varities of almost every other year that sell for about the same as the non-doubled version.
Just wondering what coins you guys don't understan the popularity of. Edited by jg86 09/05/2013 4:52 pm

I am as confounded as you. I would never pay more than 10% extra for doubling and even then on a nice coin. I have never bought coins with doubling for a premium before and likely never will. I have come across some in scrap piles and bins.

The only doubling I like are the very early large Victorian cents. And really, those are usually re-punches rather then doubling.

Really people... the only coins with doubling I've ever found is when I'm on my or 3rd, 4th or 5th scotch.

I don't get the fetishism for doubled-die varieties either - some of them cost far more than "real", major errors...

Quote: I really don't get the popularity of the 1955 Double Date quarter The 1955 double date is an example of hub doubling, the double date existed in the die before any coins were struck, this type of doubling is a die variety. Name another pre-1999 quarter with hub doubling? All the other double dates are mechanical and a result of the striking process.this type of doubling is not a variety it is an error. Many collectors, especially old-timers shun error coins, but will consider die varieties as a must-have part of their collection, thus the popularity of the '55 double date.

What would have caused the 1939 and 1940 Double Date 10 cents pieces to occur? Is this hub-doubling or a mechanical stamping problem?
I picked mine up in the 80's and the doubling was not even mentioned at the auction.

I kind of like coins that show doubling myself Particularly when it's quite pronounced like the 1962 1c double 962. Although I won't pay more than a buck or two extra for it. Unless it's a listed variety that has its own pricing of course. The ones where the seller is asking double or triple list price for something that you need a microscope to see just make me laugh. However if it's a choice between two virtually identical coins at the same price and one has doubling and the other doesn't, I'm more likely to go for the doubling.

p.s. To answer the original question, the bar 1936 varieties in the various denominations. I like one that I have where the die crack extends well across both ribbons but the ones where it's just a little line between the two ribbons aren't terribly exciting.

I personally don't care for errors like ultra weak strikes, lamination, Struck Through Grease... I do like die clashes/doubling which I have no problem spending $4-5 on a MS coin... even higher for MS63+ on some.

The doubling on the 1955 quarter is significant enough that no microscope is needed. Because it's so prominent may answer why it's so popular (and likewise priced higher than other "double" varieties?

If I might interject. I know this is the Canadian forum. A U.S. variety that drives me nuts in the 1922 No D Lincoln Cent. It is just a die that had the mintmark polished away yet they sell for $$$$.
