In my opinion there's something odd-looking about that coin. I have a feeling it's not genuine. But I don't have much experience in that so please DO NOT take my word for it. Crystalk knows much about Buffalo hunting. Hopefully he'll be around soon.

I think "thingee" is right. It doesn't look genuine to me. There's a couple of things to look for. Right, off, I don't like the look of the "missing" leg. The back of the Indians neck and Buffalo's hind should show strong evidence of rusted dies. This coin doesn't appear to do so. There should be a raised "streak" of sorts appearing to eminate from the Buffalo's groin. It doesn't appear to be there. Finally, that big corrosion spot (if it doesn't come off nicely in Acetone) will never allow this coin, regardless of authenticity, to be slabbed. Sorry to day, this coin is very undesirable as a 3-legged based on those pictures.

I think the photos are not doing it any justice. I had to downsize those to fit in the forum. We'll get better pics eventually, but these are the full size versions my brother sent me. They are better than the downsized:

I think some some may have polished away the foreleg in order to decieve. For your sake I hope it turns out to be genuine but I really doubt it. Do you have a trusted dealer you can show it to?

I agree, because the leg should have a solid looking knee cap, then the missing bottom part. This coin looks like the knee cap and the bottom part of the legg have been polished off. Definetly get this one looked at by someone.

I'm about 90% certain that it's NOT authentic. Sorry.

Other signs of a fake...are these true?

Right beard longer than the left.

The words "Pluribus and Unum" are seperated from the back of the Buffalo.

When under glass you can see the "dots", of the die crack in the underbelly but they are all but worn away for my dig cam to capture.

Sorry to be flippant, but that is just what I am going to do to a 1937-D with my Dremmel Tool when it comes time to fill that three legged hole in my Dansco. It looks altered to me.
