I don't have an official answer, but I have a guess - still I'm teaching myself to hone my eye and I'd appreciate your feedback... Sorry, but those are the best photos I have (for now) So, if possible, what's the consensus? -----Burton 50+ year / Life / Emeritus ANA member (joined 12/1/1973) Life member: Numismatics International, CONECA Member: TNA, FtWCC, NETCC, EveryCountry (online) coin club Owned by three cats and a wife of 40+ years (joined 1983) Author: 3rd Edition of the Sample Slabs book, https://www.sampleslabs.info/

Are you asking about the variety? If so, I need a closer pic of the AM in AMERICA. Cant tell if the O is squared, or not.

It's definitely an Obverse of 1856--the huge serifs on the F in "OF" are a giveaway too. If you found this one unattributed--very nice find! Photo comparison of some markers:

Thanks for the variety info, but I'm fine with the 401b - I cropped out the vss slab to focus on the grade... I have both the ANA book and the photograde app. The standards talk about the tail feathers, but I don't see the diff in the photos between VG10 and F12. Anything better than VG4 and I made out well.

I agree that it is an obverse of 1856 for above stated reasons and would grade at VG10. It is estimated that only 1 million of the 17.5 million 1857 FE minted were Type 1856. Nice coin.

If the rims were stronger on the obverse, I could see it going F12. I'll say VG-10

First thought was F12. Looks like I'm out of the concensous, but I'll stick with it.
