I am getting ready to start collecting slabbed Liberty halves and Peace dollars... I have a few questions... 1.how hard is it to find each series in AU/BU to MS condition? 2.would it be better to buy raw and join a TPG or to buy already slabbed? 3.how common are fakes for each series? 4.what are some online stores that sell these types of coins reasonably? i truly appreciate any and all help... knowledge is power and my lights are dim on these subjects... thanks PEACE...

Since you'll be spending a fair amount of money on some of those coins, if it were me here's what I'd do: -- Pick one set or the other to concentrate on; when you get it 80-90% then think about starting the other set. -- Unless you are VERY good at grading and detecting cleaned coins (abrasive and chemical) stick with coins already slabbed by a reputable TPG. That will also protect you from fakes or altered coins. The grades you are considering should be easy to get with the keys/semi-keys more difficult. More people want them so they are harder to find. Be patient. For the keys/semi-keys it will be MUCH better if you can go to a store or show to by them. For the amount of money you'll be spending on them eye appeal will be a large factor and online images age generally not nearly as good for that.

For me personally, I would chase raw coins IF you were comfortable in your ability to ball park grade them. I have found nicer coins much cheaper than the same coin in a lower grade already slabbed. Your mileage may vary on this but this has been my personal experience. I find for me the advantages to buying raw, especially if you are going to be purchasing online... a.) I seem to get more coin for the money. b.) I can buy a few examples of the same coin, choose the one I want in hand to have slabbed, and usually with ease sell the duplicates to recover money to put towards the next coin. Just make sure you are not overpaying or this will impact this approach. c.) I like to examine any coins I am going to keep long term up close and personal, not already incased in plastic. d.) You learn to rely on the slab less... example, I have an AU53 coin that runs circles in eye appeal around the same coin slabbed AU58. I want the more appealing coin... I dont care whether a third party implies the other one is "better". Again, this is just my point of view. I dont claim it to be the way for everyone. I'm sure opinions will vary. Another bonus with raw... maybe you will care less about slabbing later and you will still have great coins and more money for more great coins ;)

Why not go for a type set? There would be two (only one in DANSCO 7070) for the Peace dollar (High (1921) and Low (1922-35) Relief) and there are six (three if you exclude No Drapery, Arrows w/o motto (Arrows & Rays can be used) and Motto with Arrows) types in the Seated half dollar series; Type 1, No Drapery (not in DANSCO 7070) Type 2, No Motto Type 3, Arrows & Rays Type 4, No Motto, Arrows at Date Type 5, With Motto Type 6, With Motto, Arrows at Date (not in DANSCO 7070) Some folfs like Series collecting, one of every date and mintmark, but I prefer type collections...and slabbed by a Top III Third Party Grader (PCGS, NGC or ANACS), so I can put more money towards better examples. I would purchase them already slabbed. That way you know before you buy and not having to send them in yourself and hope that the graders are having a good day with your coins. I have sent in a few raw coins that I though were "good to go", only to come back with a "details" slab. Most importantly...have fun doing so!

the Peace dollars are plentiful in just about any grade (except maybe the lower grades, as I don't really remember seeing any P0-01 Peace dollars) and are fairly cheap unless it is some type of rare VAM or key date. Now the Seated halves are another story, they are very popular so their price is going to set you back a whole lot more than the Peace dollar in the same grade. The Liberty Seated Half in AU-50 will probably cost you as much if not more than a MS-65 Peace Dolar graded by the same companies. They are still out there but you just have to be prepared to pay for them a little more than you would the Peace dollars

Stylez, Just a quick question. When you wrote that you want to collect Liberty halves, did you mean Walking Liberty or Seated Liberty?

When he said Liberty halves, I was thinking he was talking about Liberty head halves ...another name for Barber coins. But I guess it could be all of them .. 1794 to 1947

I guess that I have Seated Liberty half dollars on my mind and made the assumption. Looking for a Type 5 myself. There is one type of Barber halves that I am aware of. There are two types of Walkers (Obverse Mint Mark & Reverse), if you want to get technical.

Im sorry for the confusion.. Walking Liberty halves.. I thought I specified but I had a brain fart and forgot.... I like the idea of the type set and will order my book later since I have a few random coins floating around to fill it... as for what to collect, I think you get more for your money with the Peace dollars because of the silver content vs a WLH... I think ill chase the slabbed Peace dollars and maybe pick up some halves along the way... I appreciate everyones help and opinion, but still interested in anything anyone has to say on the subject.... PEACE...

With series collecting, they all begin to look the same for most part, with the exception of the dates and mintmarks.
It's your collection, do it your way!
