This is a link to a pattern coin noted to be genuine ungradeable. Can anyone explain why? Is this because it is a pattern and there is on baseline or ?

It says "smoothed" on the holder, whatever that means. I've never seen that designation before.

That's odd but I would agree that it is because there is not much of a baseline

Something in the fields such as graffiti was removed by smoothing over.

PCGS does not give specific grades to uncirculated specimen coins.
Nor do they give specific grades to uncirculated coins labeled GENUINE.

Contrast the broader areas of the obverse fields with the territory around the stars; the surface had corroded for some reason and was resmoothed in the more open parts. Hence the designation. This one isn't uncommon as Patterns go; it's thought that several hundred of J-1617 were minted. The asking price is pretty enthusiastic in my opinion, several hundred over street value.

The "Uncirculated Details" description seems a bit misleading to me, as these are considered Proof strikes and all the TPG's grade them on the PF scale.

I've seen lots of pattern coins graded by PCGS, NGC and a few by ANACS. I guess any TPG would grade pattern coins. They give the grade as they do with any other coin as long as it's not damaged, tooled, cleaned, etc.

Most of the graded pattern coins I've seen are given proof or specimen grades, but I've seen regular grades from AG to MS. I have no idea of why they use MS.

See these ebay sales. 130992375731 121165508120 190710195284 121166837543

Check HA.com and you'll find lots of graded patterns with PR-## and SP-##. Not that I could ever buy one of these coins. I just go to Heritage to drool.

Here's the deal.....now that PCGS is grading problem coins, they designate problems with non-numeric specifications....ie VG, VF, AU, UNC etc......On any PROOF coin that has a problem, in this case, damage, they assign the coin a details grade, in this case, PROOF-UNC details.....The UNC only refers to the coins details and not the strike. This coin looks to have been corroded, whizzed and tooled. In this condition, you should be able to pick-up a similar coin for about $1200.
