I'd assume the early coppers would be hard to find in nice condition...

I've been looking at the Half Cents and some of them can be purchased for 150-500 in AU depending on the year... id like to do first years for the coins but some of them are ridiculously priced ($800-$3000) in the better conditions... the other part is getting the book for the coins.. I've found one that I'm trying to get now but I have to wait 'til WED before I know if its mine or not.. sweating that thing is killing me cause I haven't found another one in the 4 days I've been looking for it... the thing retailed for $23.00-$25.00 but I will probably be into it for almost 100.00 which is way more than I've ever paid for a book.... I once saw a incomplete set in a book go for over a $1000.00... so I have no illusions that this set is going to be anything other than costly to put together.... and once I figure out my camera so I can take good photos ill post pictures of everything coin related... PEACE... P.S. would anyone put proofs in the book even though its not marked for proofs? like the bicentennial set of 3 coins could be purchased in PR condition but would it make or break the set by doing so?

If you arent picky about the date none of them will really be hard to find if you have the money. If you have specific dates and mint marks in mind thats a whole different story. Its your set so you can make the rules for however you want to do it. I personally wouldnt like how the proofs look with all the ms ones but if you like that better go for it. Even though I like Ikes, the bicentennial Ikes arent going to make or break the type set no matter what you put there. The modern coins are more of an after thought to most people for it that are there to complete it but the real focus is on the classic coins.

Assuming that you will be acquiring the coins in the Dansco 7070 set, the draped bust and classic head large cents are going to be your stoppers.

thanks BB21, I think ill just do regular issues and leave the proofs for another set...
double eagle, which draped bust do you mean?..
I was just looking and there's no slot for the 2 cent silver piece? I wonder if Dansco is redesigning the 7070 by adding some coins that were previously left out... that would be awesome and make for a more complete U.S. type set....

Quote: double eagle, which draped bust do you mean?.. The 1796-1807 is a killer in AU. Itll be a couple thousand minimum. If youre looking for one for a few hundred VG and maybe F will be about as high as you can get. The F likely depends on how lose you are with your definition of a couple hundred too. Its assumed theyre in the process of updating them but its been so long since theyve put them out at this point its not clear they ever plan on releasing it again unfortunately

The early large cent coppers will be brutal in AU the 1808-14 Large Cent will probably be in the 1500-2k range 1797-1807 Cent in the $1500 range. Then the Bust Quarter....if you can find one in AU around $700. The two Seated dollars around a grand each. I'm trying to do this set in XF or better but have decided to allow a few VF's in there due to budget. An AU type set would be a beautiful thing to see though.

Stick with AU as long as your wallet can stand it. But eventually you'll have to relax that criterion.
My criteria started out as: -- XF or better -- $500 or less I blew BOTH of those limits away quite a while ago. The last coin I got for my type set was an 1795 Draped Bust/Small Eagle Reverse silver dollar. It is definitely not AU; not even close. It is F-15. And it cost a bunch (I'm still trying to dig out of the numismatic budget hole that it created).

I poster here (I think it was SsuperDave) did a 7070 in AU and I think it ran him around 20 grand total.
Several coins will be 1000+ in AU.

Quote: I was just looking and there's no slot for the 2 cent silver piece? Do you mean the 3 cent piece in silver? There never was a Two Cent in silver unless you count the Feuchtwanger patterns and they aren't even true US Mint coins they were made in 1 and 3 cent denominations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feuchtwanger_Cent

yep WC, I misspoke on that one cause I was looking at the coin wrong... thanks kenkat, I'm sure mine will be in the same range if not higher because coins are going up and I want to include the gold page... kanga, I'm sorry to hear about the budget, ima send some of my karma your way so you can fill the budget gap faster... shadowtrooper78, my RedBook doesn't even show those in AU, and looking at the prices I can only imagine what one will cost when I can afford it (I love taxtime) but it will leave me with a hard decision.... do I find the PR69 1995 W ASE for my collection or do I get one of these gorgeous coppers? decision decisions LOL I appreciate the info on the book basebal21, I see that the XF-AU conditions vary from 450 to 950, since I usually shop on ebay, when I get ready to buy one I will ask here first to see if anyone has one they'd like to part with... I appreciate everyone taking the time to answer my questions. I try to read as much as possible but sometimes asking someone who's done it can be the best knowledge and advice... I want to put this set together and do it right... I don't want to compromise the integrity of the set by putting a inferior coin in it.... I love the diversity of the type sets and I might put another set together once Dansco gets off their butts and makes a new book... I'm going to email them tomorrow and see what they have to say about the 7070... I saw one on ebay with the slip cover and gold page new for a BIN price of 150.00 and I almost fell out of my chair... I couldn't believe they wanted so much... one that was incomplete book went for over 45 the other day so getting the book first is going to be a challenge... wish me luck lol... PEACE...

A set that would be really awesome is my favorite- Classic Head Half Cent and Capped Bust half dollars; the latter probably costing more in AU but both are pretty rare in nice grades in terms of collectiblity

Thanks Steelers72, ill keep those in mind when buying coins...
I wrote dansco this morning about the 7070 and this was the replay I got.. "I haven't heard when we should be getting more 7070 type albums in from Dansco. I do know they are working on updating the modern page(s) but that is all I know. We will email you back again once when we have that album back in stock or when new info is available. Thank you for your email and if you have any other questions feel free to reply to this message"...
i just hope by the end of the year or before they have something worked out and printed... PEACE...

I'd have to agree that the early copper large cents will be the toughest. I think you'd find an XF40 of XF45 to be the best way to go on those and even then it will likely be a good chunk of change.
