VF20 obv, F15 reverse. maybe an acetone bath will clean it up a little

Thanks panzaldi! I was thinking acetone as well but I'm just really curious what it is. If acetone could remove that stuff, it surely would be a nice looking coin!

I would leave it as is. I don't see any reason for conservation.

I wouldn't. If you successfully remove that stuff, the coin will still be spotted, just in the negative of what exists now. The dark areas will be lighter than the surrounding fields, and the coin will obviously have been cleaned. Sometimes, just because you "can" doesn't mean you "should."
