I've seen several Commerative sets in holders for silver dollars on ebay lately. I was wondering if the mint sold them in sets, or is it a secondary market item. They come with either 5 or 6 silver dollars. Some sets don't include the 1935 dollar.

This looks like a 3rd party put the set together.

Welcome to the CCF!

Nice set of commemorative silver dollars!

The set features the six circulating commemorative silver dollars that were issued in Canada between 1935 and 1967. Each of the coins was struck on a planchet of 0.800 fine silver; the balance of each is copper.

1935: Silver Jubilee (25th anniversary) of the reign of George V
1939: Royal Visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth
1948: The entry of Newfoundland into the Canadian Confederation
1958: Centennial of British Columbia as a Crown Colony
1964: Centennial of the Charlotteown and Quebec Conferences; important meetings that led to the Canadian Confederation
1967: Centennial of Canadian Confederation

You can use your favorite internet search engine to learn more about each of them.

Though the RCM has recently tried to market a similar set, your set was assembled from coins purchased on the secondary market.

I would suggest you check the set's plastic holder. It appears as if it may be made of a soft plastic that contains chemicals that can harm the surface of coins â€" it can turn them green. If it is a soft plastic holder, I would consider finding a different protective cover for the set to help prevent the coins from being damaged.

All business strikes. The Elizabeth coins look to be mint state, but all coins appear to have been dipped extensively... a neat presentation set, but really not worth much more than bullion value. The 1958 would be the one I would examine the closest for grade - it has elements of a weaker strike, but looks like it could be a decent coin.

Good short type set, all in good silver. If you collect other large silver dollars to go with these, there exists a strong temptation to break the set, to include them in your larger collection.

The latest date for my Canadian collection is 1967.
At least my very old edition of Charlton is still able to help me.

How do you tell if it's been dipped extensively?

The colour of the coins, they look dead and lacking lustre, especially the earlier dates, which are not uncirculated grades. They all look the same colour, despite age and being in a cardboard holders inside a PVC plastic pouch...

That said, it is still a neat set to present Canada's commemorative dollars. It reminds me of this medal:
