I haven't seen these in person so I'm curious how they are produced.

Do they simply paint over a coin so much that you can't even see the underlying coin anymore?

Seems like such a waste of a good coin, in my opinion.

I found one of these while I was roll hunting once. It is a Westward Journey nickel that appears to have a sticker put on the coin. I kept it because when you buy a coin at face value, you can't really go wrong

overall though that it is a waste of a coin.

I know about these: instead of their usual colorinzin of the coin, they di it differently with these national landmark series. (direct from Littletons magazine): "Each has been colorized by littletons artists using a special new domed technology"
IMO it is a waste. If I'm going to spend $12.50 on a coin, I want one that is actually of numismatic intrest.
( or at least not "ruined" by this color ).
That's my 2cents.

I can understand the colorizing coin thing as there is somewhat of a market for it, but I dont understand what the point is if youre going to completely cover up the design. I guess its cheaper to buy halfs than it is to get blanks

Colourized coins are coloured by a pad printing process.
If you Google You Tube 'PAD PRINTING', you can find out more about the process.

I got an email from Littleton today that showcases these colorized halves. Terrible.

The only thing I hate more than Mimes is colorized coins! There ought to be a law! Ruining perfectly good coins (usually ASE's) for Harley Davidson, Michael Jackson, Obama, etc. is just wrong, wrong, WRONG!

wow, do they have those over the faces? that's awful, keep jfks face and lose the eagle imo. if that's what you are into. I like them about as much as stubbing the same toe 3 times in a row. slap on a cruddy sticker or something and add on $12.00...no thanks.

Come on now, everyone needs an Elizabeth II obverse/Scooby Doo reverse in their collection.

It's a fad... remember during the late 80's (yeah... the 20th Century 80's for you wise guy young bucks) Ted Turner was 'colorizing' all the old classic movies. It got some initial attention, but quickly went the way of the click-clack and the band Flock of Seagulls.

For $12.50, I'd want them to over-strike new designs on those Halves a la Daniel Carr...
