I had been looking for a while for a 1921 Peace dollar with a good strike. They can be really hard to find and even the ones that are graded MS64 or better had really disappointing strikes. I came across this one and loved the strike. Hoping I did ok on my first major (more than $100) purchase of a non-slabbed coin. Thoughts on the grade? My big concern is the luster, or lack thereof. I know that the earlier strikes from the mint tend to have limited luster (and the latter mushy strikes have better luster). Again, I just really liked the strike, which seems hard to find in the 1921. Thanks! After uploading I think I may have to take some photos on a better camera.

From those pics.. I would say you're looking at something that is at least EF...
Nice coin.. what I'm more surprised about that this was your first NON slabbed coin...
There are some coins that I simply love for the fact that I can take 'em out and really have a look at 'em... hope you enjoy the coin..

It looks like a slider in the smallish images. The strike does look very good and the eye appeal is above average as well. A nice piece.

Here are some pictures with a better camera. I bought it thinking it was AU 53-58, but there are a lot of AU-55-58 coins on ebay that have worse strikes and less luster. I am learning to grade and am not great at it, but this particular year of Peace dollars seems difficult.

Yes, the larger pics look like an AU/MS slider. Could go high AU, 55 or 58 or low MS, 62 or 63. My gut feeling is it's an honest AU58 but might grade MS62 at a top TPG these days. Either way you have a nice looking coin.

I thought it was high AU as well. It is nice to have some validation that my grading is on the right track or at least in the ballpark. I think luster is what keeps it out of MS. AgcoinAU - I have plenty of non-slabbed stuff, but they have all been cheaper purchases. I bought this at a coin shop and I think I got a decent deal on it. I had mainly been buying graded stuff off ebay, but the local coin shop was a positive experience.

Quote: ...I think luster is what keeps it out of MS... ndwlegal: Remember no luster is required for MS. A coin with no luster but no wear is Mint State. No luster would limit the grade to low MS though and if your coin graded MS62 I would not be surprised at all.

BH1964 - thanks for that tip. I definitely did not grasp that fact regarding luster. If luster isn't required then I think this makes low MS and I feel pretty confident that I paid a good price.
