Hi. I'm having concerns about this gold dollar... First, I don't like the fact that I can't make out LIBERTY on a coin of this grade. On all the coins I've researched, the LIBERTY is easily visible. Secondly, the twp bottom flowers or petals or whatever they are, looks a bit off compared to other coins... could a weak (invisible) LIBERTY be just a weak strike? Odd to have that on a soft metal such as gold though... Here's a link to one of the coins I compared it with http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...0&lotNo=4256What's your verdict? thanks

It looks fake and is most likely not even gold.

It does show the L though....and the Liberty band seems to have a more consistent width to it than my coin..
also, when comparing it to the photograde coin, mine has a lack of hair detail that I wouldn't expect to see on a coin with little to no wear on the surfaces...
Thanks for your input

It looks fake. The letters/numerals and devices just don't look right at all. I'm not a gold dollar expert though.

I agree with the others. The details have a fatty look to them.

I think your concerns are valid, although I picked up on the eye and nose first.

I may have SOME gold in it; it could be a jewelry copy. Check for diameter thickness and weight, check that info. against the specification for a genuine coin.

Definite fake for a conclusive feature compare the first S in states on the subject coin and the Heritage coin and they are obviously different fonts. On the subject coin it is squat and broad, while on the heritage coin it is tall and narrow. Liberty's eye is too prominent, the lettering on the reverse is not sharp with a rounded mushy appearance. There are other problems.

@Conder101: Interesting how our modus operandi vary in the ID of fakes. I come from a mainly ancients background, where style can vary so much from coin to similar coin, because dies were hand cut.
On the 'other side of the coin', style is often the main determinant when no comparison with a similar coin is possible, when it comes to ancients.

1868 is a VERY commonly counterfeited date and this piece is not genuine. Sorry
