Is this a proof? I don't really know much about them. The few die variations I know to look for on the 1916 I don't see, but I don't see them on actual proofs either.

Looks proof to me. I'd guess PR65BN at least with a good shot at 66.

I don't think this is. But, believe it this is an exceptional business strike.

The rims are not square. Parts of the rims are, but not all.

I could be wrong but my initial impression is it is not a proof for the same reason that acloco has mentioned.

I thought the rims had been cropped from the images? Only 3 business strike Lincolns have ever graded 66BN at PCGS. If it is a business strike it could still be a valuable Top Pop.

The very sharp detail suggests a proof, or at least a very early strike off fresh dies.
I would say it has been deliberately retained or collected, probably straight from the Mint.

It is a moot point if it is a proof or just a pristine very early business strike, the value would be much the same.

It may be a very slightly impaired proof; there are one or two tiny dings in it. That is unfortunate, but perhaps not too surprising.
Coin collecting didn't quite have the status that it has now, so less perfect care has been taken, early in it's life.

If you look at the 1 o'clock position there is a very minor Cud on the rim...makes me doubt how early a strike it is...still an awesome coin!

Thanks for all the replies guys. Proof or not I decided to pick it up. I will post it in the grading section in a few days when I receive it. Hopefully it looks as good in hand.

I like it better as a Business Strike than as a Proof. You'd expect this quality from the latter, but it's an extraordinary example of the former.
