I got a roll of 2010 SAE's today and the finish looks a little dull especially on the high points of the dress? Owner said thats the way they were "struck". Could it be age? Skin oil? Onset of tarnish?
I have a roll of 2013 that are brilliant and shiny. And several loose 2007 that are the same. This roll looks a Little dull on the high points.
also what is the weight variances when weighing these? Usually get 31.1 but have been up to 31.5. Scale is kinda a cheap one but seems pretty accurate. Maybe not!
Thank you

Mine have all been 31.4-31.5 except one. If you look at the melt values, there is .07% silver, which comes out to about .2 grams, assuming it has the full troy ounce (31.1) of silver. The ASE I have that does weigh 31.1 also failed the ring test.

I had 3 out of 40 that failed a ring test. Weight, diameter, and magnetic test were good. Everything looks great but the finnish. I DONT KNOW!!

Just out of curiosity I tested a silver maple I got from a LCS. It has 0 ring. Thats probably bad but I have nothing to compair it too. Mag, weight, caliper test was good. O well. Maybe I am bad at this.

To me, both ASE's look fine. The coin in question might have been struck with a die that was at the end of its life. On a different thought; I have some 2009 ASE's that have a similar satiny finish. I have wondered if the planchets were intended for the burnished UNC coin. Since the Mint only struck the bullion version in 2009, maybe these were left over from the previous year.

I have seen these different finishes on ASE coins, from different years. Wonder ....is it possible that they coins made in West Point have a different look than the coins made in San Fransico?

Its just weird how 3 can sound different. Not terrible bit the ring is rather short. And then to compare them to others it was like woah!
Does anybody own a Silver Maple? I have only one and thou it weighs spot on and is the right diameter it has no ring. None whats so ever. I read before others having the same problem saying its normal... Your experiences?

On the plus I sold the 3 iffy eagles in addition to 4 rounds and the silver maple. NO more worries for me. Now I have money to buy more. :-)

Ummm, you're glad things worked out for him? He just admited that he sold three ASE that he didn't think were genuine. Granted I think they look fine and think they are fine, but with that kind of attitude I think I'll be adding two new users to the "Don't buy, trade or sell with" list.

Everyone said they look fine as did you. For me it was about peace of mind. Sold them right back to the shop they came from but good to know I'll make sure no offers get sent your way.
