The mint produces circulating coinage according to demand from federal reserve banks. If the demand is there until 12/31 they will produce to meet the demand. The Mint produced 1.1 bil coins in Sept, officially surpassing total production for all of last year. As far as collector coins go, ASE's and AGE's are also minted to demand, all other coins/sets have published and unpublished mintage limits.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out they are already striking 2014 coins.

As I recall, and I may be wrong, legally the mint cannot release 2014 dated coins until Jan. 1 2014

Interesting. Auto people make and sell cars with dates on them a year in advance. 2014 cars and trucks have been out for a long time now. In April of 2014 the 2015 Red Book will come out. The famous Red Book is out a year ahead. Walmart and most stores already are selling Christmas stuff. Most storese are already changing from one season to the next. So why not our Mint making and selling coins and currency a few Months or even years ahead. Imagine getting a Nickel with 2017 for a date.

If Microsoft made Cars 1. A particular model year of car wouldn't be available until AFTER that year, instead of before.
2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you'd have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would just die for no reason, you'd have to restart it. For some strange reason, you would just accept this.
4. You could only have one person at a time in your car, unless you bought a car '95 or a car NT, but then you'd have to buy more seats.
5. You would be constantly pressured to upgrade your car. Wait a sec, it's that way NOW!
6. Sun Motorsystems would make a car that was solar powered, twice as reliable, 5 times as fast, but only ran on 5% of the roads.
7. The oil, alternator, gas, engine warning lights would be replaced with a single "General Car Fault" warning light.
8. People would get excited about the "new" features in Microsoft cars, forgetting completely that they had been available in other brands for years.
9. We would still be waiting on the "6000 sux 58'" model to come out.
10. We'd all have to switch to Microsoft Gas (tm).
11. Lee Iacocca would be hired-on as Bill G.'s chauffeur.
12. The US government would be GETTING subsidies from an automaker, instead of giving them.
13. New seats will force everyone to be the same size.
14. Ford, General Motors and Chrysler would all be complaining because Microsoft was putting a radio in all its models.

Does the mint operate during the government shut down ? This is an apolitical FYI question. Is it possible to get an equally apolitical answer ?

Quote: Does the mint operate during the government shut down ? The actual production yes, currency is essential. Regardless of what the official line is they arent going to fall weeks behind on production

Normally the mint works mon-fri except holidays. During high production periods they'll put on more shifts and day. This year they will probably begin die trials of 2014 coinage in late-Nov to mid-Dec but this is less regular. 2013 coinage wilkl be made on Tuesday 12-31-13. Some 2014 coins are likely to escape before the end of the year but won't be discovered until well into next year. People have gotten these early and the services will slab them with a date to prove they are early releases.
I imagine the last day of the year is fairly light work since they won't install nearly as many new dies as on typical days. Of course, existing dies are of no value any longer so it might not be extremely different. On the first workday of the year (I believe Jan 2)they will swap out allthe obverse and reverse dies on the presses before production resumes.
I believe this is when they often make mules with one year reverse die and a different year obverse die. I believe the technician is sometimes confused by a very good condition reverse die and neglects to change it. Most of the mules have reverse dies of the previous year rather than a later year. You can just look at the date on the obverse die and know whether you changed it or not.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Quote: Does the mint operate during the government shut down ? Probably, they are self funded and do not require government appropriations. Quote: I wouldn't be surprised to find out they are already striking 2014 coins. Probably not, they don't normally start making dies for the coming year until late Nov. Quote: They can't legally "release" them but they can mint them. The law as written says that they must bear the date of the year in which they are struck so legally they CAN'T strike them before the start of the year........but they do. Quote: Then again it's the government and they do what they want to when they want to,right? Right. The LAW says they can't STRIKE them, but the government says "Well as long as we don't release them it will be OK."

Remember this at the beginning of the year when the 2014 Silver Eagles are available right after new years. The mint is probably striking these now or soon to be. It takes time to make and ship the eagles and get them ready for sale.

Silver eagles are often struck much earlier. Back when the TPGs started doing the "First Strikes" in 2005 it was learned that the 2005 ASE's had been struck as early as August of 2004.
