Hobby for me too. I'd be crazy to have paid some of the prices I have in the hope of a decent return!

Having said that I have recently started to go for eye appeal (quality) over rarity, I guess partly because I'm aware that those coins generally do better when you sell.

But it's still a hobby rather than an investment because the only reason I sell coins is to buy ones I like better!

On too many occasions I've not even made back what I spent on a coin. Particularly those early purchases! If I want to keep improving my collection that has to stop and I need to at least start selling for enough to keep up with the market.

To me this is all an investment. I've been collecting coins for well over 60 years. The way I look at it all is I'll keep on collecting for about another 60 years, then sell off everything and use it for a life of relaxation for the next 60 years or so.

I'd kinda like to see the look on Carl's face when he comes to sell in 100 years time and finds out all payments are done electronically and they have no idea what all those round metal things are!

Research research research and then research some more. Ultimately buy what you like but buy smart. I personally go for semi-numis. Not much over spot and greatest opportunity for appreciation with out losing your shirt.

The joy collecting what you love trumps all.

I tell my wife that I collect as an investment, but the truth is that I collect as a hobby and hope I never get to the point where I actually have to sell anything...

Hobby for me but we all know that it is a potential investment especially with the silver and gold coins and if one strives for the best that they can afford.

back when I was in Germany, which was probably the only place I could ever pay reasonable prices for junk coins, I spent in total 2 hours digging into the heap of coins. so you can imagine how an enthusiastic and very pleased kid would have looked haha. I liberated so many LMC's, like 80% of them were beautifully lustrous, 5 s mints at least, and quite a number of wheats, that I think if demand goes up for these coins in the near future I see myself making a healthy profit.
I also bought 2 euro coin bags that yielded at least 2 coins that were worth way more. I saw opportunities to sell them individually, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered with low value or worn coins. also, buying error or variety coins at regular prices... :D I wouldn't sell a 1/4 of my collection, since I bought them for their appeal.

I do it for both since I know I can get a ton for face value so I stand to make some good profit or I can use the quantity to trade up to something more rare.

I found this thread because I thought it would be interesting to poll how many (like me) have never sold a coin. This poll doesn't quite cover it, but I guess it's close enough. As others said, people who primarily flip coins for profit probably aren't hanging out here, so the "never sell" percentage would probably be skewed.

Pure hobby. No interest in ever selling, unless so strapped it was unavoidable. And even then I'd sell a kidney first.
