I am throwing out a little larger lasso to try and herd me up a nice variety-type No Rays Shield nickel and I am trying to work out a deal with the seller on this piece as it presently resides in a PCI holder. The images appear to have been taken with different settings/lighting since the reverse gasket is brighter (or the OBV gasket is darker). The color looks good, but is it too good? I may be doubting myself because of a darker Shield nickel I was looking at earlier. Of course there is a "no questions asked" return policy. What does the CCF think about this one? Thank you for you interest! Edited by oih82w8 10/23/2013 08:07 am

Not sure about the color but appears to have strong details for a later die state AKA die cracks obverse.

I think the color is fine.
I see it has a die crack and scratches.
Looks like AU-58 to me.
It's a pretty nice coin for sure!

The coin seems to show no wear but the way some of the marks look have me wondering if they came from circulation. I would say that it likely grades no higher than a MS-61/62 due to the marks. The luster may not be very strong but that might be a result of the photography. One possible reason why the other nickel looked darker could be that it is in a lower grade. Circulated nickels are often dark gray due circulation and those that have little or no wear are usually lighter shade of gray.

Looks cleaned and scratched, the big one is of course on the obverse, the large scratch on the reverse isn't too deep nor as distracting to me. The little hits and ticks on the shield lines tell me it was cleaned fairly recently, they are awfully shinny, too much for my taste. I'd pass myself, have you tried Gary Rosner?
If you don't know him shoot me an email he has quite a few available on his website a couple nicer than this one, most of his are AU though he has a nice MS64 right now.

Wes, I have a coin (1868 Rev of 67 NGC AU58 ( DDO unattributed)) https://goccf.com/t/157990 on hold at 3Centnickel (Gary Rosner), I am just not sure it would obtain a FS attribution with PCGS being that it is not listed in the CherryPickers Guide. The scratch to the left of the date may be on the plastic, due to the light color. I will have to get with the seller and see of those scratches are on the slab or the coin. BTW, the coin in the OP is attributed as RPD FS-1305 (FS-005.6), which is one of the reasons I was drawn to it.

I got the coin today and it looks really nice to me. Something that I did not notice on the reverse are the broken (incomplete) letters; ED in UNITED, the first S in STATES and the R in AMERICA. The "scratch" to the left of the date is a die crack (raised on the surface), in which there are many.

I figured you knew Gary Rosner, he is a straight shooter dealer, and always has some nice stuff available. I buy from him often.

Where are my manners? I did not post their grade; PCI MS62 (RPD FS-1305) FS-005.6 I realize that PCI is not among the Top Tier, but I think it's a looker and it has the variety to boot. I am going to crack it and send it to ANACS soon (as mentioned earlier) along with the 1868 DDO NGC AU58 for attribution and photo imaging. More to follow.

awesome.....looks like PCI had a direct crossover to PCGS....that's a good thing for PCI slab holders!
