I started this epic quest on April 1, 2013, and this 2011 silver Vienna Philharmonic bullion coin has been in my pocket ever since. Here it is after more than half a year.

The strings on the little violins' necks (?) went fast - the strings on the big central instrument's neck (...bass? double bass?) have also worn down smooth. The central strings are starting to flatten and run together.

On the other side, the cherubs' faces are barely visible and the ornamentation on the big organ is also beginning to go.

Anyone got a grade for it?

Interesting experiment. I suppose this is what you get when you treat a .999 silver coin like a normal circulating coin.

May I ask what the point of this is?

Firstly, because it is a cool experiment , must mostly it gives a whole new outlook and appreciation of " circulated " coinage. I think we take for granted Eagles,SMLs,Britannias' graded MS70,69,68....etc. Look what a 6 mos does to this coin. What about a 1878 Morgan, what does 135 years of circulation do to a coin. How do any Morgans, IHC, V nickels, ever survive in MS condition or even in AU condition if they were in circulation. An experiment like this gives you " food for thought "

Fair enough.

But no circulating coins are ever .999 silver. As you've discovered just by carrying one around in your pocket, .999 silver is just too soft to withstand the punishment.

As for coins that remain in good condition, despite being put into circulation, chances are the reason they're in good condition is because they haven't *really* been in circulation. For example, my Mum went to South Africa in the late 1960s. She came back to the UK with a bunch of loose change, mostly coins that had only recently been minted. Obviously she couldn't spend them in the UK so she kept them in the loft and now they're almost 50 years old and still in great condition. The only way a circulation coin stays nice is if it's effectively removed from circulation.

Hope you changed trousers in that six months.

Personally I hate coins in pockets it wears the fabric out too fast.

@ DB - sometimes there is no point to this. I have carried different pocket pieces over roughly the last 50 years. Some of them had some reasoning behind why I carried them but others were just for "shts & giggles". I got this in change in Canada on my honeymoon in 1968 and carried it for at least 10 years. This is what a lightly circulated half (.800 silver) looks like after.
