Although, in this case, I think circulation got to it before I did. My coworker had a $5 in his drawer and asked "Hey, why does this note look weird?" And showed me this: I know nothing about this note, I'm a serial numbers guy, but I'm pretty sure the.. ickiness of the note precludes it from being valuable. I like it though, it's got a really neat look to it and everything, so it'll stay in my collection for a while at least!

Any time I can come across an old note like that, I've had a good day!

Yeah I always get a thrill out of old finds too. My coworkers are awesome about giving me the chance to buy old bills and coins and stuff from their register. I hate how they always feel like they have to mark it with a counterfeit detector pen (as you can see to the right of the big 8 seal). I wish they'd say something to me and ask me about it FIRST. Not that the counterfeit pen mark is the worst part of the bill, but it's a splotch where there doesn't need to be one :(
And wow, I didn't think a regular old $5 would be worth that much, that's neat. Like I said though, I'm actually interested in collecting old bills (It's small so far, I have this $5 and then two silver certs, one of which looks like it got into a fight with a weedeater or something) as opposed to the fancy serials I find, so I will probably hang onto this bill for a while. Aside from being so old, it's got a really neat design and I really like it.

That's as far back as you will find them in circulation. First series of small notes...1928. Anything before that in the large note "horse blanket" size has long since been removed from circulation.

That is a great find.
And for $5 face you can't go wrong.
The oldest I have ever found was a 1963 $1, $10, and $100.

Well this has been a good week! Today I walked into work and they handed me this stack of bills and were like "Hey do you want to buy these?" It was a stack of five Silver Certs (two of which were star notes) and a.. United States Note $5? I know nothing about that, but it was neat so I bought it. It's still crisp! It feels almost like a brand new note, though it's got some folds and a gosh darn counterfeit marker line across it. Oh well! So, my answer was heck yes I do! Here is a crappy picture of them - I thought I took enough attempts but when I went to look at the pics they ended up blurry. Oh well, there's also an album of closer, better pictures of all the bills. Sadly I ran out of clear plastic bill sleeves when I found the $5 at the top of this post, so I had to requisition one from a Barr note I had, and put the new $5 in it. I'll sleeve them all when I can get more, but I'm not too concerned as the silver certs are in abysmal condition. Here is a link to the album! http://imgur.com/a/JKwLV#0

i like those star notes. I hate when they put those counterfeit marks. a friend of mine worked at mc donalds and he showed me a picture of a 1995 $20 and it had that same counterfeit line through it.

I wouldn't worry too much about the counterfeit marker because it fades off pretty quickly. How often do you see the marks on bills you receive? You know that most of the higher denominations get marked at banks or stores all the time. I hardly ever notice counterfeit pen marks though...

Yeah, I'm hoping it will fade off in time. I know sometimes it just doesn't fade, though - You still see slight yellow markings on the older $50's (with the white background instead of.. whatever color it is now) and just on some other various bills. If it doesn't fade, oh well, they're still some really cool finds.
I especially love the red seal $5. I'm not sure why I love the look so much, but I do. I'd never even seen a red seal note before I found this, so it was exciting.
