We've all taken bad/unfocused pics of our coins. I stumbled upon this site- it's for educational purposes only. So it's legitimate. It costs about $10 for supplies. Which are 2 pieces plexiglass, lens from laser pointer, screws, wing nuts & washers. I'm going to give it a try today or tmrw. Hope this solves the unclear picture problem. Here's the link

This was posted about two weeks ago, I became interested and bought the supplies last weekend and I am slowly putting it together throughout this week. I can post a review of what I find later this week if you want.

I came across this video a few days ago and I think I'll try this one out. Time to make a trip to the hardware store.

Yes, please do.

I have more than one old laser pointer to mess with.

Here's a quick photo from my completed project. I'll continue to fine tune it.

So I finished making mine last night and here is what I found. (Note, I am using and iPod 4th generation as my camera)

Pros

-Very cheap
-Good as a microscope
-can take pictures whenever you want

Cons

-not good for full coin shots
-the coin has to slide on the plastic to get under the camera
-not very convenient (slow) to move coins in an out from under the camera because they have to be so close to the lens
-would probably work better if I had a better camera

Overall it was well worth the $16 I put into it as a microscope but would probably not be good for speed coin roll hunting. I was also hoping I could take full coin shots from it as I haven't been able to on my ipod. I am still learning about it and should have some pictures up shortly. If anyone has solutions to any of my cons I would like to know.

Just got an e-mail from Wizard...

Looks like the do-it-yourself option is about ten dollars cheaper and offers more flexibility (in my opinion).

Went out and bought a pointer but it doesn't have a lens...apparently UK laws mean they have to be made sturdier (they are limited to 1mW, the pointers, so they have regulating circuits). Anyone from the US up to send me a cheap one with a lens for a reasonable price?

I looked at purpose made macro lenses online and the dont seem nearly as good for some reason.
