Gwyde Pillar of the Community Belgium 506 Posts	Posted 01/14/2014 03:02 am The Irish Republic started coining in 1928 (seven years after gaining independence from Britain). It has always been an animal farm on Irish coinage. This 1934 3d coin depicts a hare. Unlike the UK, 6d and 3d were minted in pure nickel (a copper-nickel alloy later on), but the silver shilling, florin and half crown were of a better 0.750 fineness. The legend in Gaelic is stating Irish republic in full (not just 'Eire'). Peculiar is the denomination 'Leat Reul', 'Leat' meaning half; translated to UK slang, that would sound as 'Half a tanner'. The Belga = 5 francs, was a failed experiment to make prices look lower (after Belgium went off the gold standard as a result of WW-I). 1934 is the only true key-date for this large nickel coin: We wellcome King Albert I on this coin, issued during the year he was injured and died when climbing a rock wall. This was the only silver peseta issued by the Spanish Republic and was the last time this coin was issued in silver for circulation.
