1930 Austria 1 groschen



The old Austrian Krone lost most of its value during World War I. A bronze 100-kronen coin was struck in 1923 and 1924, and in 1925 the currency was reformed, with 10,000 kronen becoming equal to 1 schilling. The bronze groschen coin of 1925-38 is the same size as the 100 kronen and has the same obverse design.

IN 1930, the first Belgas were circulated by the Belgian mint. The coins of one Belga or 5 Francs were to reduce the proliferated low face value banknotes. This pure nickel two Belga coin was a commemorative for 100 years of independence of the Kingdom. It doesn't frequently show up in auctions, since most of these coins have been returned to the National Bank.



The obverse has the (only) three Kings ruling the country in its first century. (The present King Philippe is seventh.)

I like collecting this country because the coins are attractive, and from the Republic era into the modern age, it's so DO-able.
From the canal building days onward, there was a steady flow of Americans coming and going from there.
Everything I own from this quasi-American 'colony' has come from melt tubs or similar bulk sources.

Maybe one day soon collecting canal-zone coinage will be as popular as collecting Newfoundland!
