Okay. This should be the third part of my "how much I can fit into the 1923 coins day" bunch. This particular coin was one of the contenders for most beautiful coin of my collection. Then either it got an ugly scratch, or I noticed it already had one  admittedly, it's beautiful anyway (and I'm still searching for a scratch-less example of the type).   Yeah, Czechoslovakia made some really beautiful looking coins  (and the modern Czech Republic isn't far behind either). |

Okay. There are five coins still to go, but three of them were already posted, and one of the remaining two goes in a "set" with two of the other three, so that only leaves one coin I really want to post before I go to bed. ...In 1923, Germany issued an aluminium coin denominated 500 mark. It was the largest denomination in the old Reichmark/Papiermark series, probably hardly circulated (because of the sheer amount of inflation), and before the year 1923 ended, the entire monetary system was replaced by the new Rentenmark. There was a few months of hyperinflation in the meantime, however, so the coin below was, by official exchange rate, worth 40,000,000 of the old aluminium 500-mark pieces... despite being issued in the same year.   This would be 1923-J. There's no mintage figure listed in Numista; I've heard elsewhere that this is an uncommon date for this issue. Shame that it's also scratched... and apparently also recently |

january1may: Thanks for the interesting bit of history. Here's that 1923 aluminum 500 mark you were referring to . . . in BU- ! This is a photo of two different coins. Note the die crack. Only one coin shows this feature. I have no doubt you are correct about these coins hardly circulating. No float testing these, please   (size= 27mm)

 Belgian Congo, 1 franc, 1922 This coin has been through quite a lot... I actually like its nasty patina, which is vaguely symbolic of the nasty colonial times this was spent during. |

Is there a limit to how many coins we can post? I initially thought it was just 1 but it seems multiples are ok. So.... something unusual French Toulouse 1922-1927 10 centimes Al A post war-time emergency coinage issued from 1922 to 1927. It does have a 1922 date on it.  |
