We're still missing a half crown for today, 1920. As of tomorrow, (in 1919) British silver coinage will be upgraded to sterling fineness. Unfortunately that also brings us near WW-1.  For some time to come, we will keep the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" on half crowns... until it quietly disappears again somewhen under Queen Victoria. The 'i' of 'Honi' and 'p' of 'pense' are among the first letters fading on a half crown, which is why these are hard to find in XF or even VF.  |

1920 was the very last year of silver coinage in France. Prices were rising and circulation silver coins were being hoarded. Mintage numbers for 1920 were much lower than what they used to be. It would make 1920 a key year, but both the survivability is high and the average grade is very fine, making these 1920 silver coins somewhat more common.  The design was so popular that it was taken up again 40 years later, after a 100:1 currency reform. Even today's french euro coins of 10 cts to 50 cts still use a stylized image of "la semeuse" on their 'national obverse'. |

Ha @Gwyde, what a coincidence, I just ran into the 1960 1 franc version of that coin today, it looks exactly the same. I picked it up from circulation somewhere in Europe in 1987, not in France. @jack_jeckel, looks like we're doing the Pilgrims in descending order by grade.

I am thinking this coin has been cleaned .. sometime in the past. I think I should try to fix it, and see if it will re-tone better. 1920 Mercury dime  |

GR58, how would you 'fix' that dime w/o ruining it? Sometimes mottled toning can happen when there is finger oil or something similar on part of the coin, preventing the toning from taking hold. That's a nice coin as is. I wouldn't mess with it. Here's another one of these..   ...and this, which arrived by mistake from an ebay seller who sent it instead of the thaler I bid on. He gratiously said 'keep the half' to make up for his error.

Thanks Spott I have been looking for a good picture of that 'Zehn Heller'  I have one too. 1919 seems to be somewhat sparse, I only have 1 penny and a half from the UK, and they are not pretty. I'm not going to dig it out now, maybe in the morning if no one has posted better.  |
