Hi good coin folk- Someone mentioned in a recent thread how seldom this series appears in the grading thread. So I thought I'd share this recent acquisition. These are tough for me to grade, thus any and all thoughts/opinions/comments are welcome. I note there is a nicer, shinier specimen currently posted, and although mine does not approach that level of condition, it shares some of the same issues. Most particularly, the spotting. Does this make it ungradable, undesirable? I'm fond of these but the pre-1925's are soooo tough to find with readable dates at reasonable prices. I paid $10 for this beauty and feel lucky to have 'spotted' it. The acetone soak I gave it had no obvious effect. Would some other treatment be advisable? Or should I leave it as-is? Thanks for looking in. -msy

Are you in the Philly area? I had my eye on a similar one my dealer bought but somebody else bought it before I could get back.
I'd say market grading, it's a 35. Spotting hurts. Technical grade I'd go 45-50.

Technically you have what appears to be an AU coin, probably in the AU53 range since the curvature of the knee is intact. There seems to be a slight break in the wear pattern between the knee and the shin. Big bargain at 10 bucks imo. nlp

looks low end AU, however the surface issues really kicks the value of this one down...but for $10, I think you did ok

mysilveryears, it was me that started the ball rolling. Thanks for posting the SLQ. Since I have just begun with this series I won't even try to guess. I would buy a roll of these at $10 each so good find.

Thanks for the replies. If I ever get to 'Philly' I'll have to check out the local shops. Must be a ton of them there ;-)

Not that many, I think there's 5 dealers within... 25 miles or so of me.

THAT is a BARGAIN at $10. Would leave as is. If any kind of dip is used, the luster that remains, might be lost forever.

I suspect that this coin was heavily toned, completely black at one time. A few cleanings over the years have removed some of the toning and what's left is so heavily toned that attempted removal will leave the coin surfaces with a rougher surface than what you see now. I would imagine when the toning started the coin was probably a nice AU but was subjected to a high sulfur environment and that's when the black toning occurred. May have been wrapped in old newspaper or in an old envelope.
It would grade Net XF 40.
Best bet (in my opinion) is to leave it alone, put in in your type set and enjoy your $10 purchase for years to come.
Nice find and purchase!

These coins are nightmares to grade, but I would say this is on the lower end of an AU

Are those simply "spots" or are they "etched" into the coin's surface, such as you might find with an environmentally damaged coin? Regardless, and like someone else alluded to, for $10 I'd buy that coin all day long!!
