I have always had an affection for the Carson City mint myself, and just got a great book on it. It's a huge book that I found on Amazon through an affiliate seller at a too good price. The thing is the size of a college science textbook! I found a hardbound copy for less than the softbound sells for usually.

Thanks for the article it was a good read! Now I need to get onto the book, though I have a few in front of it waiting to be read first.

Interesting and educational. And here all this time I thought the reason was lack of space on coins for two letters for the Mint

Article starts off saying "Carson City is only one of seven cities in the past 200 years to be home to a United States Mint. Compared to metropolises such as Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver, Carson City, located in northern Nevada, seemed both tiny and in the middle of nowhere."

1) Philadelphia
2) Denver
3) San Francisco
4) West Point
5) Carson City
6) New Orleans
7) Dahlonega
8) Charlotte

I suspect the one they missed is 4) West Point.
IIRC, the only coin it ever made for anything remotely resembling circulation was the 1996-W dime (and even that was an obviously special issue).

They also produced cents with no mintmarks during the 1975 - 1986 period.

One big reason why the Philadelphia Cents still lack the "P" mintmark. So San Francisco and West Point could strike no-mintmark business Cents as supplemental production, without them being hoarded out of existence due to bearing "W" and "S" mintmarks.

We all know what would happen if "S"-marked ATB Quarters hit the Federal Reserve
