There were no 1971 silver halves but if you are really keen, check with your local coin dealers or coin clubs, you should be able to gain access to some silver testing equipment.

I use one layer of facial tissue, one coin that you know is silver and one clad. They will look like this: If they are toned/darkened this will not work. But this is one way to check in your album if they are silver or not and not have to remove them to see if they are correct in your book.

Some bigger/better pics. and the coins weight would help out a lot.

I would handle that coin very carefully. I would try to keep it from being fingerprinted. Oils from your skin can have very bad side effects.

It looks like play money. Are you sure it doesn't have the word COPY on it?

Im a kennedy MANIAC!! First off yes this is possible and wow my friend you have a score if it is actiually silver and from your pics it seems to be. Secondly 1971 and 1977 are years known for this. the mint in the mysterious and crazy ways have had silver planchets "slip" imto the machine. I would find a reputable coin shop to verify it. I would submit it to pcgs. Nit to make money but to protext this rare coin. Congrats what a awesome find!! Wow thats why I do this. That rare beauty! Wow iI am so excited for you. I found my first kennedy error coin last night and this post makes me as excited as I was last night!

I agree with errorcoins - the pics that you posted do make it look to be some sort of replica. The profile just does not look right. please do post some larger pics.
Also, there is a 71-D noted for a rotated REV, but not a 71-P. Is yours a P or D?
And before sending this in and paying for it to be validated (or not), get the weight of it. If the weight is correct for a silver one, then would be the time to take the next step. But if the weight is off for a silver half, then it could be plated or a replica of some kind.

OK so I finally got around to inventorying my coin collection. Started in 1963 and never sold even one. As a matter of fact I have 3 rolls of 1964 Kennedy half's still in the OBW. I bought them with money I made cutting grass in south Saint Louis. Nevertheless I have accumulated a lot of Kennedy's. I started doing my half's and had a number of Kennedy's I never went thru. They were still in the cardboard sleeves. I am not exactly sure but I think I got them in an auction with other coins a few years back and did not pay much attention. However the first one I picked up read "John F. Kennedy 1/2 Dollar Silver - 1971". I thought it was just a mistake because I knew the only circulation-type 90% silver was 1964. As it turns out I have: (5) John F. Kennedy 1/2 Dollar Silver - 1971 (1) John F. Kennedy 1/2 Dollar Silver - 1971-D (1) John F. Kennedy 1/2 Dollar Silver - 1972 (2) John F. Kennedy 1/2 Dollar Silver - 1972-D (2) John F. Kennedy 1/2 Dollar Silver - 1974 (1) John F. Kennedy 1/2 Dollar Silver - 1977 (1) John F. Kennedy 1/2 Dollar Silver - 1979 (1) John F. Kennedy 1/2 Dollar Silver - 1985-D So I searched to see what I have and ended up in this forum. The 1971-D Reverse appears to be off somewhat to the Obverse. Rotated counter-clockwise ~ 30-degrees. I have not taken them from their holders just yet however they all appear to be toning like silver. They look a great deal like my 64's. I have attached some images and hope they are useful. Anyone want to add their opinion.....please. Appreciate your time.

The person who put them in the flips was confused/mistaken about them being silver probably is my guess. pop em out and look at the edges.
