I have a coin that I am thinking about submitting to PCGS for their guarantee. The coin is a MS69 1982-D Washington Half. There are none graded higher and the price jumps from $40 to $185 from MS68 to MS69. Here are some photos:

The obverse looks OK to me. There are several scratches and marks on the reverse. You can see several diagoanal scratches or hits on the right above the eagle and below the house. Also there are 2 more significant vertical hits on either side of the eagle.

I bought the coin in the slab last year. I don't want to sell it as a MS69 and I don't want to sell it for a big loss. Do you think I should send it to PCGS for their guarantee?

Well, I can't say what to do in this case, I sure don't think this coin deserves the lofty MS69 grade due to what you say (scratches or ticks on the reverse). Might just be worth it to call them up, explain your concerns and see what they say - they will probably request you return it for a check over, I'd make them pay the postage if that is the case!

Sheldon scale: "MS69 Coin has a sharp strike with full original luster, with no more than two small non-detracting contact marks or flaws. No hairlines or scuff marks are visible. Eye appeal is exceptional."

I see a lot more than two and they're detracting. What are those spots on the obverse?

I just thought I would post an update. I sent the Washington Half in for the guarantee service along with a Jefferson nickel that was graded FS when there were no steps visible. After about 10 days, I got an email back stating that the coins had been regraded and both did downgrade. The Washington Half is now graded MS67 and the FS designation was removed from the nickel's grade.

They offered to buy the coins outright from me. The offer was based on the old grades and I thought the offer was fair (though less than their Price Guide states.) Alternatively, they would send the coins back to me in new slabs with a slightly smaller cash offer. I chose to get the coins back.

This was my first (and hopefully last) guarantee submission and I was pleased with the results.

Thanks for the update and good to see they make good (to some extent) on their guarantee.

I think there is a member here with a dateless 1917 which is in a 1916 slab which the would not honor their guarantee or buy back.

Good to see they took care of you on this, PCGS doesn't want any coins that are over graded in their holders, as it makes them look bad, since they stand behind that with cash, it is one of the big reasons they are considered the top TPG in the marketplace today. Gotta respect them for that alone.
