First post - I will need some help with one 1878CC Morgan dollar. Not sure if the pictures are OK too.

All of the 78 CC's I've ever owed, or seen, have the small CC ----- almost looks like a "oo" ----- mint mark. So, the mint mark font is too big, date is too big, too. Looks like a Chinese counterfeit to me.

It's a counterfeit. Wrong reverse die used to make it.

I concur. The date is a dead giveaway.

Not good with detecting counterfeits but something about the date is throwing up red flags.

Wow, such a disappointment but thank you all for the help. I did purchase this coin together with 11 more Morgans (79, 82, 85x2, 86x2, 89, 90-O and 1921x3) in June and July from a very big and "reputable" auction house here in Toronto. I do not collect US coins but these were part of a huge lots (hundred of coins each time) and I bought them for their Canadian content keeping in mind that these are potentially $30 or so. Did not pay any attention on them at the time as they looked OK, the one or two I placed on the scale were very close to what they are supposed to weight and I simply do not have any other good Morgan to compare. I was looking to find a good home for them and since the 78CC is more expensive compared to the others I wanted to get your opinion on the grade and the potential price. Now on the question - are they silver? They are all non magnetic, the diameter is as it is supposed to be at 38.1mm. This particular one weights 26.63g and the others (except one of the 1921 @22.15g) are within 0.1g from the 26.73g. Any pointers to a database that collects images of counterfeit coins as I can submit the ones I have. Or if there is interest I can post them here for the wall of shame.

I do agree, the coin does not look natural, almost too strong of a strike for a coin that has wear, but thats not always a winning solution to proving these are fake. To me, its the rim and centering, the reverse from 1 o'clock to 5 o'clock looks odd. Also see if some one local has a Morgan dollar you can size up. Look at the thickness, diameter and edges. This one looks like the rim area might be an issue as well ?
