Hello, I purchased an 1881-CC Morgan dollar from a small city in New York. I was in mylar taped to the back of a picture. For clarification, yes, I did spend a pretty penny on it. What do you think it's grade is? Thanks in advance for any input. Edited by Collector-Corner 11/26/2013 11:03 pm

This coin is beautiful, massive appeal! I'm still working on grading, but I think this is MS64. Could even go higher, the reverse is outstanding.

Simply beautiful! There's no coins I like more than toned Morgan's.. The reverse is basically flawless, one mark below "America".. The obverse looks pretty good as well... Not quite as nice.. But a beauty none the less.. MS-64

Do I see a large die crack on the reverse?

Yes, there is a die crack on the reverse as well as the obverse. The die crack on reverse runs through UNITED. Another die crack starts at the first "S" in STATES and goes clockwise to the Eagle's wingtip. From there it goes around the wingtip and end at the "R" in AMER, and heads towards the rim.
Thanks for the kind words and grades so far.

Strong 64 with a chance at 65.

The reverse of this attractive toner is a solid gem. The obverse is choice. MS64 sounds correct for the overall grade.

VAM-2. The hefty survival rate of this issue belies its' low mintage; it's not intuitive that a coin with only 296,000 minted would be worth a little over $500 in MS64. But there it is.
Eye appeal is utterly off the charts. This one grabs me by the throat, and I'd be reduced to giggles were I able to add it to my collection. The cheek doesn't quite allow me to go 65 on it, but if PCGS were to call it that I wouldn't be handing out pitchforks.
MS64+ for extraordinary eye appeal. If this one goes in your cases, you need to get top-of-the-market money for it.

@ Dave and Dave; I agree its a VAM-2. The Reverse is spot on, all the way to the die crack. For all, a non-toned example can be seen here; http://www.vamworld.com/1881-CC+VAM-2@ mkman123 - I don't buy on ebay. I buy from legitimate sources that I have been dealing with for over 2 decades, or take a chance at organizations and agencies that are willing to work with me on prices. I am a huge fan of Morgan dollars. One day I was sorting through the safe and my daughter and her fiance come in and my daughter asked "So, Dad, is there anything you buy that you don't sell ? " I gave her one of those "of course" looks, and handed her a NGC box of 64 and 65 PL Morgans, and another of Toned 64, 65 and 66 beauties. She said WOW, where'd you get these, and I said through many places and many years. And there are more of these than I am willing to pull out. She says, well, that answers my question ! This one I will eventually send in and get graded and attributed. I am an even bigger fan of the Carson City Morgans, and while I can I am diving all in to buy one of each at the highest level my wallet can afford. I do sell the lower graded coins and move up slowly in the Morgan dollar market and it is paying off. I'm a collector, investor and businessman all wrapped into one. A Toned Morgan dollar is hard to beat, and thats why I collect them. = )

Even if you beat the grade - and they're available up to MS68 - you'll have a hard time beating the look. An amazing coin.
