Weird for sure! Could be an error but I'm no expert.

Is the area on the reverse from 10:00-3:00 damaged? The weakness is also seen on the obverse side from 2:00-5:00. It maybe a struck through error (grease) on both dies. The die is in the later die states, but no die flow to the rim.

I didnt even notice the reverse! Good catch! Here are some better pictures, the wear looks similar to the obverse, does not appear to be damaged imo.

1940-S

These are common strike issues during the 40's, no premium attach. Try and find fully struck issue is harder, but not impossible.

If you have the Cherry Pickers Guide, Volume II, check page 65.... There is a dime with a die like this one that could have a chance at a DDO. Maybe the die is beyond a DDO since its heavily worn, but I thought I would mention the possibility.
