Yes larger photo's would help but if there is indicators that there was another circular attachment point on the opposite side of the one still remaining. It could have been a pendant type necklace. Since it appears to be of a brass bronze material, and can't tell what is on the reverse of the item.

If you had said you'd had this since age 13 or 17, I would think it was part to the wave of Egyptian-style jewelry that came with the great "Treasures of Tutankhamun" tour of the US from 1976-79.
