From my recent large cent album purchase. (2) 1814 large cents. Both with obvious problems. I only wish to keep 1 of these coins. Which one would you keep and why?

IMO, no question: the right one. Why? MUCH clearer date, MUCH less rim damage, MUCH clearer reverse.

That's a no-brainer, Moe. Agreed.

For me, I like nice surfaces. The only reason I even put these coins up against one another is I just don't like the scrubbed bright copper finish on the one on the right. Do you think the hit on the obverse is actually a planchet flaw?

I prefer the color on the one on the left but since both would be details grades the right one has a lot more detail. 1814 is a "common" date as far as classic heads go you could sell both and get one you can be happy with.
As for your question, it doesn't appear to be a planchet flaw.

Fill your spot with the cleaned one for now. Much better detail.

I'm going to go against the current and agree with you, Ben. The harsh cleaning of the coin on the right would prevent me from ever being able to enjoy however much more detail it may have (and it really isn't all that much more). The only caveat is, that, with time, the right hand coin's surfaces will tone again; the left hand coin will never gain more detail. By the time the two coins' surfaces are comparable again, though, you and I will probably no longer be alive.

BTW, Classic Head Large Cents are very hard to find without any problems and when you do, the bidding or demand is pretty fierce.

i'd keep the one on the left - I love that natural looking color over the bright shiny one. I agree that you should sell both and buy the best you can with that $ though.

I'd concur with Moe145 and go with the one on the right although its been cleaned and lack eye appeal. The coin on the left however has no eye appeal with the obvious obverse damage. I would never buy either coin individually but this is an example of when you buy lots sets or collections you have to buy the wheat with the chaff. Hopefully with what you paid for the set you have nothing in either coin. What I would do is sell both coins. The one on the left I would just dump it on ebay. The one on the right would be a great candidate for a local collectibles auction in a group of several other coins. Sometimes people as these type of venues decide its old its neat and I've got to have it. The best coins for these are, no surprise silver dollars, but better date large cents with problems that are $150.00 or less value I've seen them go to the moon.
