This is kind of cool, never seen a Canadian coin waffled, must been mistaken for a SAC dollar.

Exactly, Zonad!

It was accidentally swept up in the massive recall of German coins in 2002, as the Euro was about to be issued. It was "waffled" at one of the mints in Germany.

By the way, the Loonie is about the same size the old German 2 Mark.

Please note the identical crushing pattern -

So this would make it "rare PMD". Will it someday attract a premium like a "JOP Dollar"?

I guess if there was a market for a waffle loonie, it would be very easy to fake this coin with some practise.

Definitely an interesting piece, but I would not want to have too much invested in one.

I might add that the Canadian "waffle" came with a piece of coin webbing and a normally mint-cancelled German 1 Mark (both shown below).
Also, that the three items reportedly had been saved by a former employee of the PMX Industries metal smelting plant.

What's the purpose of the "waffle" piece?

Why not just chop them up as they are removed from circulation? Doesn't old paper money just get destroyed when removed from circulation?

I've never heard of this process before,..and you can tell that I don't get out a lot...

Interesting to learn that not all countries melt the coins for the metal content.

I see now that I put the wrong Title on this thread. It should read - "An Accidentally Mint Cancelled Canadian Dollar"
