If it is mint sealed, how do they know it has 4 cameos and double die?

I found lots of unopened mint sets on e-bay, WHY would anyone buy something and not know what's in it?

It MIGHT have cameos and DD's

I'm sure about 99% of "unopened" ones on ebay are repackaged with modern day envelopes. Sad that these sell for more then an opened one.

I recommend staying far away from these but if you must bid on them don't bid any more then you would for a normal 64 set with no packaging.

First of all, I don't believe that most of the "unopened" sets on ebay are truly "unopened". Many of these sets were originally shipped unsealed, so it is quite simple to look at the coins and then seal the envelope and call it "unopened".

Personally, I wouldn't purchase an "unopened" set on ebay. Even the ones that I get from clients, I prefer to open prior to sale. We have sold a couple that were unopened and, because I knew the client I was selling them for, I knew that they truly were shipped in the condition I received them in. That's why I'm saying "most" instead of "all" of the unopened sets.

I'm not bidding on them, just checking prices for my own set. Which I will probably put on members auctions here.

LeAnn,

By using slang, the seller has you confused. He/she says "Look 4" more accurately it should read "Look for" and is an encouragement for you to buy the item with the hope that you'll find cameos and DD's. Personally, those envelopes are too easy to open and reseal without evidence of tampering to the untrained/unequipped eye. You are relying totally on the seller's honesty. Most are brokers who are in fact the second, third, fourth, etc. owner of the envelope. And they have probably all taken a look!

OK, not saying I did buy 'unopened' mint sets. Not saying I didn't. But if part of the provenance is that they're unopened, we'll never know, right?

Hi,

On those unopened mint and proof sets. I bought a set those once on ebay and some were junk with spots on some them. I even paid 10 bucks extra for reproduction envelope's to fix the dirty or where I riped them open to see coins. My reproduction envelope's look perfect and you Cant tell they are reproduction since they are that good. Trust me they good on those Kraft envelope's.

In that unopened proof set or mint set is big time fraud on ebay and you can get riped off big time.
1. Say an 1955 or 1956 flat pack cost over 145 bucks each. Trick is the 1968 or 1980 something mint set without dollars is the same as the 1955 Thur 1964 proof or mint set. They feel the same compared. Those mint sets cost like 5 to 10 each and 1.49 reproduction envelope you have an fake 1955 unopened proof set.
2. In auction they state there are returns on the proof sets if ever opened. People are buying them big time. I feel bad for them they ever open them to find an worthless 1980 or 1970 or 1990 something mint set. The crooks can turn like 10 bucks into over 100 bucks real quick.

This how I found out about this fraud. I was buying lots proof sets for my collection . I asked another dealer I trust on ebay since he sales them opened. I told him what happened to two of my proof sets I bought factory sealed with carbon spots on them. I was going buy replacements from him. He told me about those guys doing that with junk coins. One lady got kicked off ebay since she posted an warning auction about what going on . The sellers complained or whatever and see caused an big problem for the crooked dealers doing that. She bought those reproduction envelope's with 1980 something mint sets in them. I felt bad for the lady getting burned from buying those worthless things. So after that I never would buy any unopened mint or proof set ever on ebay. Its not worth getting burned over 150 bucks or whatever.

I was Lucky it could have been worse for me buying those sets. So don't ever buy them if not worth at any cost since those guys I think are still selling there?

Here link on ebay more about what I am talking about. http://reviews.ebay.com/How-to-Buy-...1:LISTINGS:1

Second link, http://reviews.ebay.com/Unopened-Mi...1:LISTINGS:2

So there you have it on those warning . Chevrolet 454ss

I put this terminology in the same category as "unsearched" Unless the seller is the original owner and is totally honest they can't really know if its true or not. Most people would open a set to make sure the coins were not damaged. There may be some unopened sets that someone bought in bulk but the desire to find cameo and deep cameo coins is a big incentive to "take a peek" Mike

I contacted someone on ebay a couple of years ago selling mint "sealed" mint sets because the envelopes looked like they had been taped. The guy responded that he had taped them shut, but what he meant by being mint sealed was that the cellophane was in tact and never been opened!

If you would not buy other coins that carry price tags say over $10.00 why in the world would anyone buy these things?

Amazing!!
