Hello and forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong area. I inherited a large silver coin collection from my folks. Most of them are pre 1967 coins..nickles right up to silver dollars. I admit up until recently I had just kept them in the original plastic wrap my mother kept them in but I'm now learning that they need to be sorted and placed into some sleeves of sort which I got from a dollar store. I had hoped to save this collection to pass on to my two children (I'm almost 60 now) but my son (who lives with me) and I have fallen on hard times, as I know so many others have. The house we live in is for sale as it has been for over 3 years (out in the sticks). In short I have to sell what I have just for us to survive the winter and pray the house sells in the spring.sorry for the sob story..my question...how do I find someone in the nearest big city that I can trust to sell my coins to? thankyou very much

espie - welcome to Coin Community!

Sorry to read of your dilemma as well.

First, find out if there is a local coin club. If so, that would be my FIRST contact, bar none. Coin collectors know EVERY dealer within distance of you - bet on it.

Consult with several of the club members and then ask if you could host a bid board, simple auction, or price/list items for sale.

If a local coin club does not exist, post your location, as there are members on this site from everywhere in the world...I bet at least a couple of the members, are local to you!!

1. Look up in Google for coin shows in your area.
2. Look up local coin collecting clubs similarly.
3. Look up local coin or hobby stores.
Now if you can get to a coin show, there are usually several dealers there and you could get the possibly best offers since there is compitition.
If not, next best thing would be a coin collectors club. Do the same as above.
Last is a coin or hobby store. Usually they will give you the lowest possible offer.
One thing to remember is not to mention things like I need the money. Or I'm broke and in financially desperate situation. All such statememts bring out the worst in many people.
Placing your coins on an internet place like ebay would take you a long time to get rid of those coins and then too, might get hardly enough to make it worth your time.
Unfortuately one of the worst things about living out in no where is just what your going through. No easy access to deals, no easy access to medical sitations, no method of getting rid of a coin collection. Sorry for this but it is rather the truth. Although you may not have the time, you could possibly try friends, neighbors and/or relatives for a loan using those coins for now. This seldom works but any port in a storm.

You folks are all so great..thankyou so much! "just carl" thakyou for your tip about not to mention personal finance situation..that make sense. As William Shakespeare once said "we judge others are we are ourselves". I like to think people are above board and willing to help but that's not really the way the world works is it? My nearest city is London Ontario and that is an hour away. UGH..I really am a a babe in woods aren't? I'm scared off of ebay because I think it is just for folks who have a lot of of time and are willing to risk being ripped off (sorry don't want to hurt feelings). This is a miserable time to sell silver is't it? My son and I went through everything and there are only a couple of coins that might be of interest to collectors. Would I be allowed (a friend of my son has a digital camera) to post a picture for someone to give me an idea of the grade etc? I very much appreciate all the help...Jo
