Attended a gun show for a couple hours yesterday. Oh my...is all that I can say. A small time coin dealer had one table set up. ALL of the items on the table, were overpriced and overpriced junk. Even had a set of Franklin halves with "As Seen On TV" proudly displayed....never even asked, judging by the rest of his prices. If it was a shiny silver half or dollar, add $40 to the price. Another person, "old timer" I will call him, had 4 books that a person could thumb through. ALL of the IHC's were, well, corroded or bent. Did not matter if it was a 1907 or an 186x. He had a PIC red slab 1877, that had been cracked open by him (he told me to remove verdigris). Grade was AG3, corroded. The date was gone, from corrosion. The N in ONE was also completely missing, so, I don't know how anybody could determine this was an 1877. Oh well, it is the THRILL OF THE HUNT...right? :)

Ever notice that you don't see the gun show coin dealers like this at the real coin shows?
Now you know why.

I've seen the same thing at gun shows here. They are trying to prey on the ignorant.

The gun show that comes to town here every few months usually has someone trying to sell coins. I've only bought one coin from a gun show and it was a slabbed 1971-S PCGS PR67 Ike in and old green label holder for $12. Everything else is way over priced. Guns too, but that's another story.

Actually there is a good reason for coins, jewlery and just stuff at a gun show. Same with camera shows, knife shows, computer shows and on and on and on. The reason is simple. For example many people bring a wife, husband, kids to those shows. You may be the one with a kid at a gun show. He is now bored to tears since he is either to young for a gun or just doen't care for real guns. HOWEVER, LOOK. Coins. For a wife there are always people selling jewlery at a coin show or gun show. Same thing. She is borred so LOOK, a necklace or bracelet. Some dealers are evem smarter by carrying small toy guns or bullets in the shape of a bracelet or necklace. In one case I knew of a lady that was into guns. She brought her husband to a gun show. He did buy a knife since he wasn't into guns. By me we have gun shows, computer shows, camera shows, sporting card shows, cat and dog shows and on and on and on. AND at almost all of them, there are people selling somehing different than what the show if for. It's callled good buisness.

Gun shows have changed so much. The last one I went to was so crowded you could hardly get to the tables. Used to be hunters and sportsmen but now it's the doomsday prepper types, scary.

Thank publicity for that. Regardless of the item, all it takes is for advertisers to make something popular. Coins are a fantastic example. You see coins advertised in mail order catalogs, on TV, in magazines and on and on. This is why coin prices are a bit on the high side. Same with guns.

I blame the NRA . They're now nothing but a mouthpiece for the big gun companies and to scare up sales for them. We parted ways years ago when I finally figured out for myself what my father had always known.

Not surprised to see crap coins at a gun show. Heck, there are coin shows full of tooled/whiped/even harshly whizzed coins. It's very hard to find honest surfaces on IHCs--it takes hours to find just a handful of good coins.
