I think it's external damage that occurred outside of the mint. Probably occurred a very long time ago, too.
Rest in Peace

It looks like circulation wear on what was a raised rim bump.

Looks to be an older rim bump. But on the flip side, looks like you might have a CC/CC VAM!

probably a VAM 3A capped die, worth a premium, the " Cud" looks like to me also, an old rim bruise that has worn down, so no Cud. I think I can make out part of the die gouge from the eagles left wing near the AM in America. Check vamworld photos against your coin to be sure.

Its a ding on the rim, and the rim wear has taken or worn the dent down.

Sorry to have arrived late; work dominates my life on the days when it happens.

I tend to agree with those who have called this one the VAM-3 "capped die" CC/CC, and that's something you should be happier to know, Charlene. This is a Top 100 Morgan, important-enough to have appeared on the very first "this is one you gotta own" list created by Morgan variety experts. Wear has slightly obscured the primary identifier of the overstruck mint mark, although it's still apparent in your images. Equally-important, this variety has a heavily doubled "1" in the date, and I can see that doubling even in this heavily worn coin.

Welcome to the Top 100. This one's a keeper.

Have a close look between the A-M of AMERICA. Hopefully (since it's a protected area), if it's there, you'll be able to see a die gouge sort of connecting those two areas. This is the differentiator between VAM-3 and VAM-3A, pretty much an academic-only difference but that's how we roll in VAMming.
