Do any members have experience buying online from apex, and if so is it a good way to purchase older US coins to start a collection? I am just getting back into this, and don't really live near any local coin shops or know anyone who collects coins.

You are correct, my first post and I already messed up! Anyway I was just hoping for anyone with history there could tell me if this is an decent way to start collecting silver coins. I am buying mostly Walking Liberty halves. I see everything on ebay but honestly am a little hesitant without much knowledge and was hoping APMEX would be a safe way to purchase and not get pay too much over market.

I have purchased bullion from APMEX, but Walking Liberty halves can be purchased at many online dealers.

newbee1: to the CCF!

If you don't have access to good local coin dealers, buying on line is the way to go.
Take heed to all of the warning comments about ebay, and you should be able obtain what you need from this source, hopefully at reasonable cost.

In your situation, I would suggest silver rounds may be a good option for you. If that is the case, APMEX would be excellent.
Unfortunately postal costs will be a small but significant and inescapable extra on every purchase.

It would be of great advantage to you, to post regularly here in the CCF, to learn lots about your interest in numismatics.

Thanks, I guess I was looking for a shortcut to build up the base of a collection. Buying in bulk probably would get me a bunch of the most common coins. I don't want to be a hoarder, but I really do like silver coins!

Buying bulk coins you would get the common and/or low grade ones, with many duplicates. Eventually, you will probably have to buy specific coin dates & mintmarks to complete a set.

To be honest I have been spending way too much time on this site over the last two days and am starting to realize I don't know very much about numismatics, but I can see there is a wealth of knowledge here among the members. I am also impressed that this site seems to be helpful and friendly.

I am afraid I already pulled the trigger on a bulk purchase, but I feel like this is just the beginning. Hopefully I can stay focused on one set and not be all over the map as several wise members have cautioned against. This is something I have wanted to get into or back into for over 25years. I was really into collecting coins when I was younger and when my parents moved and put everything into boxes my coins magically disappeared when it came time to unpack. It kind of left a bad taste in my mouth for a long time but to this day I can never help but examine my change for wheat pennies or silver even though it doesn't happen much.

When I was trying to build my Buffalo nickel set, I purchased some bulk sets. Eventually, I had to make specific purchases, either online or in person.

to CCF! Definitely check local coin shops before you go buying online. You might find what you're looking for in your own back yard!
