Hello all, took this 2005 D Kansas quarter to Ontario Coin Show. Error expert there said it was improperly annealed and it was the first Kansas quarter he had heard of. Thought I would share with all of you. Thank you for the look and thoughts. Edward M.

Improperly annealed ? Since when are quarters or planchets annealed before minting ?

Im gonna have to say that the "error expert" was incorrect...give it an acetone soak and see what happens.

They are annealed except for the zincolns. But this one looks like an outdoor find. Reverse is pitted. It would make an interesting pocket piece. The devices would turn silver colored again and the fields would stay darker, kind of like an antique look when they are taken out at the right time.

Okay, I had a bit of a brain wobble there. Iwas thinking he was telling you it was improperly tempered.
That is why. I said " since when " ? Since they anneal many..many planchets at once, I would imagine that it would be hard for one single phanchet to ghet improperly annealed.

Genuine improperly annealed planchets will still have luster. Without luster, you have to assume environmental damage.

Thank you all, that's why a second opinion always helps. Sometimes even the experts are incorrect.

Are the shiny tops of devices that show the layer underneath a good indicator it's PMD? Most painted or plated coins should have this when they've been circulated

When found all the devices and fields are usually the same texture/color. The outdoors turns them that way. When they are carried in your pocket, the tops of the higher points on the coin will show silver again and the lower areas will remain dark. They look antiqued. New image added to my files: Thanks monica!
