So I was happy to pick up a few items from this auction. No real eye popping pieces right now I'm just filling some dates and will improve later.

My major question is this:

What happened with item 489?!

'38 MS66 rd went for 1700!

Is there a back story behind this coin or can someone tell me why there was so much action. This kind of coin is far above and beyond what I buy but I'd really like to know why.

Thanks

AgCoinAu,

When it comes to small cents, I'm one of the least informed members here. But this lot piqued my interest as well so I will share my thoughts.

First, the description of this lot needs some help; the phrase, "Tied for 3", by itself, is a meaningless statement. After checking the census, I see they were trying to tell us this cent is tied with two others for the finest known; there are three MS-66 RDs out there with none finer. I would have said "Tied for finest known!" in the title and then gone into more detail in the description.

As far as how the coin achieved that price, I will leave the speculation to the cent specialists and only guess that someone had a passionate desire for the highest grade. MS-65 RD trends at $65 which makes this quite a logarithmic leap!

That is a very high price for the coin I would say. But it is the first one I recall seeing at auction. If you look at comparable sales...say 1949 and1947 in the grade....I would have predicted $800. But cents have been doing better lately and this is a tough one to find in the grade. I wouldn't be surprised if some the the ICCS cents have been cracked for registry sets.

I also was watching the 1938 cent auction and VERY shocked at how high it went. I knew it was a very special cent, not just for the top 3 best ever graded by I.C.C.S., because of it's EYE APPEAL. This is positively the most beautiful K.G. VI cent I've ever seen. All it takes is 2/3 small cent collectors to fight over this coin to bring it to that level.
I'm sure this morning when the winner awakes and finishes his first cup of coffee, he'll be wondering what the heck he's done?
I purchased a much SCARCER coin for half that 1938's price in last night's auction, one I've been waiting 10 years to upgrade to. (lot # 640)

Glenn... WOW what a pick up!! VERY nice coin! Congrats on the pick up!

I mean it's great for this hobby that new boundries are being challenged... but this is a whole new realm for me. I like watching the auctions to see what certain items go for, and to see how much interest is in a particular item. But I think when it comes time to start looking at these dates for pennies myself... I will be very happy to have an MS 65 for a far greater discount!

Lot 373 was my sole purchase. I've never seen such a nice 1870 10 cent and cannot wait to add it to my set.

Look forward to hearing about what you folks won.

I spent far more than I intended. Five items in total. My 19 year old son really enjoyed watching the live auction and together we bid on about 20 items that I had bookmarked. I did not find the prices all that attractive (after including premium and taxes)but the quality of the items was surprising. This time of year is bonus time for a lot of us and so the auctioneers timed this perfectly.

Yes the premium + shipping really takes it's toll... but I find it's hard to find such high quality lots to look at anywhere else.

Of course right now I have and will be picking up more of the lower end items. I just like EVERYTHING right now.... ahhah only way to afford it all is to get the lower end items.

So very true smallcentguy, you can pretty much guess where my 1938 ICCS MS-66 1-cent is headed... to PCGS. This was ridiculous money for that coin, but it might have a shot at PCGS MS-67, but it is not fully struck, and there appears to be a strike-through thread/wire on the reverse. That said, no shrewd collector I know would just drop that kind of cash on a 'chance'. In my opinion, there are lots of beautiful 1938 coins in older (embossed) ICCS holders grading MS-65 that may be superior to that one in the auction. My MS-66 used to reside in an older ICCS MS-65 embossed holder, and I bought my coin a heck of a lot cheaper than the TCNC coin.

Lots 504 to 507 surprised me. I had been selling 1964 BU rolls from a mint bag for half that price per roll for almost half a year, and I even donated about a dozen rolls to CCF for their kids coin table at the FUN and ANA shows. 1964 is probably the most common year to find BU 1-cent rolls, so I wonder why these sold for so much?

Spp....is your 38 already in the ICCS population count? If so I can say with a high degree of confidence that none of the currently existing ms66 1938s will be seen in an auction any time soon. And I bet 1 or 2won't be seen in ICCS holders when they do.
