Hi, My first post and I was wondering if I can get some help. I bought two mint 1927 and 1919 Newfoundland pennies from a local dealer. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the "C" mint mark is missing from the 1917 coin. According to my book, for the 1917 and 1919 penny, the weight is 5.67 grams and 25.40 mm. Most dates were struck at The Royal Mint in London England and do not have mint mark. 1872, 1876 and 1904 were struck at the Ralph Heaton and Son's mint indicated by an "H" mint mark. 1917, 1919 and 1920 were struck at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa as indicated by a "C" mint mark.I could find no further information including searching the internet that states these coins were minted other than in Ottawa and I am wondering if these are legit coins since the 1917 coin is missing the "C" mint mark directly above the "UN" in Newfoundland Both coins on my digital scale weight ~5.59g and they have a diameter of 25.49mm. The coins are in very good condition, and the dealer said he'd rate them as MS-63. It does seem that King is missing a lot of detail in his coat and hair and I'm wondering if that is typical for this coin's mintage. Here are the photos, what do you think? Not 100% certain but I'm leaning toward counterfeit. They have the missing nose bridge commonly found on counterfeit GeoV coins, but I'm not familiar with Newf large cents, maybe this is a variety.

I am 100% certain. Both the 1917 and 1919 are counterfeit. Made in China.

I couldn't get past the mushiness in the hair details... thought counterfeit too, but glad some that know have indicated thus. Scary though.

Your location in your profile says YVR (airport code for Vancouver). Can you disclose who your "local dealer" is?

Thanks a lot for the posts! Lots of excellent and knowledgeable members and I appreciate your input and information.
I going to email the dealer this thread and I will have to take the coins back. He didn't know they were fakes. He is very humble person and I don't want to paint him with a bad brush. This will be education for both him and I.
Happy New Years all, Majesus

I have had no internet for almost 30 days and see this thread first few minutes back on-line. I see nothing has changed.
