Hello all!
I think this is the first time I'm posting in the Australian subforums. I just got this coin, and I was wondering how to classify it:
$2-Joined-Irb?

Apparently there is a "Joined IRB" and "Spaced IRB" variety of the $2 coin, I was wondering which this counts as. It seems to me that the letters are joined, but maybe joined actually has it closer? I can't find any pictures on the web to compare.

Also, other than that, what's the difference? It seems the spaced one is the one with normal mintage, so what is this? Does it have a different K number? Is it much rarer? Is it worth (nominally) more?

Thanks for your help!

It could be that there are three variations in the IRB for the $2 coin - IRB separate, IRB with RB joined and IRB all joined. It may be that the IRB with RB joined is just a lighter strike, but I believe this variation occurs with other coins in 2001. In my collection I found the following - see what you think (sorry about the quality, but I had to reduce the size to get the images accepted) :

IRB Separate

$2-Joined-Irb?

IRB with RB Joined (your coin)

$2-Joined-Irb?

IRB All Joined

$2-Joined-Irb?

I agree that there are actually three types but McDonald's only lists two.
The distance between the text and rim is probably different but I haven't checked.
Only the combined mintage for the three varieties is known and your is the most common. The other two aren't particularly uncommon though.

Hello all!, following on from this fairly old thread The Greg McDonald guide lists the 1999, 2005, 2007 and 2010 as also having 2 IRB varieties.
In the 1999 $2 I can only find IRB all spaced and no I spaced RB joined. Conversely, in the other 3 years I can only find I spaced RB joined. No IRB all spaced. Can anyone confirm if the varieties that I haven't found actually exist? If so, are they to be found in circulation or only in mint sets?
Thanks, Hans.

My understanding was that 2001 was the only year with two different IRB types (my above post is incorrect - the third type is some sort of error, not a true variety).
1999 has the two different head sizes and I didn't think there were any varieties at all of the 2005, 2007 or 2010.

Yeah I just got the latest McDonald's - looked like those footnotes are wrong.
